Introduction:

Understanding oneself is among the most interesting and challenging tasks

that an individual should be able to achieve in a lifetime.

Understanding the self goes beyond knowing one’s identity or being aware of who
and what you are. It warrants unearthing several information about yourself from
various perspectives ----
time: your past, present, and future self;
dimensional: your physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual self; and
functional : your political, material or economic and digital self,

In connection to this, the Commission on Higher Education has decided to

include the course Understanding the Self ( UTS) in the new General Education
Curriculum to:
Facilitate the exploration of the issues and concerns regarding self and identity to arrive at a
better understanding of ones’ self. It strives to meet this goal by stressing the integration of the personal
with academic – contextualizing matters discussed in class and in the everyday experiences of students –
making for better learning, generating a new appreciation for the learning process, and developing a
more critical and reflective attitude while enabling them to manage and improve themselves to attain a
better quality of life ( CHED Memorandum Order No.20, s. 2018 ).

KEY CONCEPTS:
Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental questions about existence,
knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. Such questions are often posed as
problems to be studied or resolved.

Philosophy is embedded in everything. We all have philosophies which form the

basis for our motivations and what we do with our days. Everyone has their own
philosophy of life; every institution has a philosophy.

The history of philosophy is replete with men and women who inquired into the
fundamental nature of the self. The Greeks, the earliest thinkers, attempted to
understand reality and respond to perennial questions of curiosity, including the
question of the self.
