result of rearranging the letters of a word
or phrase to produce a new word or
phrase, using all the original letters
exactly once.

D. Lesson Proper

Based on our activity, what are the hidden Algebra, Constant, Variables, Coefficient, Term,
words? Algebraic Expression

Based on these words, what do you think

It is all about Algebraic Expression
would be our topic for today?

To have better understanding of the topic, let

us begin the discussion.

Algebra

- Is a branch of mathematics that uses

symbols and letters to represent numbers and
operations.
Republic of the Philippines
Region 02
Department of Education
School Division of Isabela
ECHAGUE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
San Fabian, Echague, Isabela

 It involves:

Letters/symbols “variables”

Numbers/symbols “constant”

Constant

- is a symbol with exactly one number

or a fixed value in its replacement set.

Examples:
1
7 -2
3
1.618 √2 π

Variables

- these are symbols that can represent

different values.

Examples:

a b c ☺ x y z
 To demonstrate these variables. Let’s have
this exercise. List all the possible values of
the variable.

1. a is a positive from 1 to 3

a= {1,2,3}
2. x is the age of a teenager

x= {13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19}

3. Y is a negative multiples of 3

y= {-3, -6, -9, -12, -15,…}

Application of the constant and variables

in real-life situation

Give an examples of constant and Examples:

variables.
Constants

1. Number of minutes in an hour

2. Number of days in a week

Variables

1. Electic bill each month

2. Speed of car

Algebraic Expressions

-an algebraic expression is a combination

of variables, numbers, and operations.

Examples:

x+3 2x+y or (2) (x) + y

x
x-y or x÷y
y
2 2
Xy or x·y a + b or (a)(a) + (b)(b)

Let’s us now break down the different parts

of an algebraic expressions.

Example 1: 3x - 5

Variable: x

Constant: -5

Coefficient: 3

Terms: 3x and -5
E. Generalization

 How can you identify a variable  By determining the symbols that

within an algebraic expression? can represent the different values
like x and y.

 Why is it important to  allowing you to properly

differentiate a variables and manipulate and solve equations by
constant in algebraic understanding which parts can
expressions? vary and which parts are fixed.
