CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The internet has become an essential tool for various purposes,

including social networking, banking, telephony, conferencing, and

multi-media sharing. According to Selvaraj (2015), the rapid growth of

the internet has significantly impacted students' development, as it

allows them to socialize and engage in interaction. The modern

communication revolution has brought us together through various

tools, including search engines, websites, emails, RSS, electronic

journals, newspapers, and the internet. This study aims to examine

the impact of social networking sites on students' academic

achievement. While these sites are not intended to have a detrimental

impact, they have become increasingly dependent on daily life. The

study examines the advantages and disadvantages of social

networking on education, focusing on the potential adverse effects of

pervasive media use among college students, such as texting, phone

calls, and updating Facebook statuses.

Through the ability to exchange information, ideas, and

messages, social networking links people and organizations.

Businesses utilize social media to market goods and services, build

and increase brand recognition, and respond to customer questions

2

and issues. According to Kenton (2023) the advantages of social

networks include their ability to help people connect and keep in

touch with family, friends, and new acquaintances; the chance they

present for businesses to advertise their brands; and their capacity to

immediately disseminate important, if not crucial information to

people and institutions.

Since 2004, WPU-Quezon has been offering the BSED

programme. Up until recently, academic achievement was actually

steadily improving over time. The BSED students usually utilize social

media at some time to assist them in conducting pertinent research

via their subject matter studies and maintaining their good academic

standing. According to Chukwuere (2021) Social media platforms give

students on-going opportunities to advance their study. Due to social

media's potential to improve learning and performance, students in

developing nations are starting to use these platforms to their

advantage. It helps students effectively advance their academic

learning and performance.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

The Social media's Impact on Education

Social media can affect education and learning in both positive

and negative ways. It can cause students to become disengaged from

their studies, which can harm their academic performance and

productivity. Addictive websites and apps like Instagram and

8

Snapchat can divert attention, putting pupils at risk of cyber bullying

and other forms of online abuse. Together, educators and students

must strike a balance between the benefits of social media and any

potential drawbacks in order to guarantee a secure and effective

learning environment. To provide a secure and effective learning

environment that leverages social media's positive effects while

minimizing its negative ones, collaboration between educators and

students is essential (Botero, 2023).

A student's social life now includes extensively using social

media. Today, many institutions view it as a learning platform that

improves student involvement and capacities. The ability to interact,

communicate, obtain information, and do research is provided by

these platforms for school-aged children.

The most effective method of connecting people from different

locations is social networking. One of the elements influencing these

relying possibilities and how social media is altering education is its

popularity in daily life (Singh, 2023).

The Social Media's Effect on Students' Academic Performance

Students increasingly rely on social media platforms for various

benefits, including staying connected, learning, and communicating.

However, the prevalence of social media has raised concerns about its
9

impact on academic performance. This blog explores how students'

use of social media affects their academic performance and offers

suggestions for balancing online activities with academic work. It

emphasizes the importance of time management techniques like the

Pomodoro Technique to improve focus and concentration. Online

interaction can also negatively influence mental health and

cyberbullying, leading to poorer academic performance, increased

stress, and anxiety. To address this issue, students should be taught

to avoid cyberbullying and report incidents.

Social media offers numerous educational resources, including

information and ideas from academics, professors, and institutions.

Students should actively participate in educational material by

following reliable accounts to leverage its pedagogical potential. They

can engage with one another, broaden their professional networks,

and share experiences through networking and collaboration.

Balancing social media usage with academic achievement is crucial,

as it allows students to educate themselves, collaborate, and form new

connections. However, social media can also be a source of distraction

and trouble. Students should be mindful of their internet usage and

strive to make social media a benefit rather than a distraction from

their schoolwork (Murtaza, 2023).

The study found that teens' social media usage has negative

effects, such as invasion of privacy, productivity loss, and distraction

10

from academic work. However, when used properly, it can benefit

students by creating online communities. Parents and educators

should monitor students' use and encourage them to use social media

for academic goals rather than undesirable behaviors (Lozada, 2019).

Utilization of Social Media and Academic Performance

Most of the participants admitted to regularly using social

networking sites for purposes other than academics. These ingrained

habits can prevent students from focusing on their schoolwork,

negatively impact their grades, social interactions, and sleep patterns,

and promote a sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity, which

increases their risk for non-communicable diseases and mental health

issues (Kolhar et al., 2020).

Social media platforms give students on-going opportunities to

advance their study. Due to social media's potential to improve

learning and performance, students in developing nations are starting

to use these platforms to their advantage. It helps students effectively

advance their academic learning and performance. However, because

social media platforms are distracting to students, the effects of these

platforms on academic learning progress are commonly

misunderstood. Social media sites, in the opinion of many academics,

have no beneficial effects on students' intellectual development

(Chukwuere, 2021). Students' daily life has been significantly

11

impacted by social media, largely as a result of excessive smartphone

use. Social media is used by students for both academic and non-

academic objectives. Academicians are currently dealing with

pedagogical concerns as a result of a surge in social media usage, and

the issue of whether or not social media use influences students'

performance is raised. In light of this, the purpose of this study is to

investigate the impact of social media use on students' academic

performance (Hameed et al., 2022).

Different social media platforms have developed unique features

that enable them to provide their consumers a variety of services.

According to Hindawi (2021), one example is its ground-breaking

function in fostering relationships. Statistics demonstrate that, among

other things, the usage of social media is significantly boosting the

rate of romantic relationship creation. Interestingly, because it is a

simple communication method, this procedure has also led to long-

distance partnerships. People can now keep their connections going

more easily. Due to the accessibility and affordability of shared

knowledge, social media has grown to be a powerful platform in

academics during the past ten years. The students' learning process

has become simpler as a result. Due to its broad use, students from

one region of the world are now able to learn concepts taught in

different regions. In addition, the media and journalists now take

social media seriously as a viable way to do journalism because so

12

many people read the news there. This has also made it feasible for a

new avenue in journalism to emerge.

Additionally, social media has become a crucial component of

how business and correspondence are changing. Social media has

developed into a potent tool for product and service marketing

because the majority of people spend the most of their time there. The

growth of product promotion, buying and selling, and delivery

services via social media is now undeniably demonstrated by

numerous research. Social media has also grown significantly in terms

of the number of entrepreneurs using it, many of whom are

succeeding. As a result, it has become a fantastic platform for

entrepreneurship (Hindawi et al, 2021).

Due to social networking's ability to help kids thrive

academically and continue their studies at home, it has undoubtedly

considerably benefited their lives. Students' study habits are greatly

influenced by social media networking sites like Facebook, YouTube,

Telegram, and other educational websites. Students frequently access

these websites, using them for both leisure and educational purposes.

Students can get assistance from specialists and solutions to their

queries (Shafiq & Parveen, 2023).

With more than 2.9 billion monthly active users, market leader

Facebook was the first social network to surpass one billion registered

accounts. Four of the largest social media sites, owned by Meta

13

Platforms, have a combined monthly active user base of over one

billion: Facebook (main platform), WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger,

and Instagram. Over 3.7 billion monthly users of the main Family

product were reported by Facebook in the fourth quarter of 2022

(Dixon, 2023). Social media engagement has become a crucial

component of any marketing plan as social media platforms develop to

reward genuine social connections. Here's a look at why we believe

social media involvement is so crucial and how you may get over

obstacles to create a winning plan (Eckstein, 2022).

In the third quarter of 2022, internet users in the Philippines

used various devices to access the internet an average of 9.14 hours.

The daily average for social media use was 3.43 hours. Television

viewing and streaming music are two other activities performed by

Filipino internet users (“Hours Spent on Media Philippines 2022 |

Statista,” 2023).

The Youth's Challenges with Social Media Networking Websites

Since social media is a relatively recent technology, it can be

challenging to determine its long-term positive and negative effects

(Simplilearn, 2016). However, a number of studies have found a direct

link between frequent usage of social networking sites and a higher

risk of depression, self-harm, anxiety, and loneliness. Teenagers who

rely on social media platforms often experience FOMO (Fear of

14

Missing Out), leading to constant checking of their messages. This can

result in pressure to fit in and outperform others, leading to a sense of

superiority. A 2019 poll by the Cyber bullying Institute found that over

36% of middle and high school students in the US have experienced

cyber bullying, with 30% having been a victim twice or more.

Additionally, social media users often disseminate information that

should not be accessible to the public, causing misunderstandings and

information misuse. Social media and networking sites can revoke

personal and figurative rights, causing poor performance and failure.

Children spend up to a whole day online, especially during holidays.

Studies have found a clear relationship between heavy social media

use and poor grades. Additionally, excessive use of mobile devices and

excessive online privacy, particularly on platforms like Facebook and

Instagram, endangers their safety and privacy.

A significant area of research now focuses on the connection

between college students' usage of social networking sites and their

academic success. However, the majority of current research is

erratic and depends on student self-reports. This study compares the

advantages and disadvantages of using social networking sites,

proposing an inverted U-shaped connection. College students were

asked to download a monitoring app for a week, and data was

gathered by examining academic performance from internal college

records. The results show that social networking usage is favourably

15

correlated with academic performance up to 88.87 minutes per day,

but after that point, it is adversely correlated. These results'

consequences are examined (Tafesse, 2022).

The Modern Education System is Being Reshaped by Social

Media

Social media has significantly impacted our daily lives, from

socializing and engaging to organizing events and socializing with

friends. This essay focuses on the various ways social media is

transforming the educational system, empowering parents, students,

and instructors to share knowledge and build communities. Statistics

show that 96% of students with internet access use at least one social

network. Many students use social media for various beneficial

activities, such as finding internships, publicizing success stories, and

working on cross-border initiatives. Schools often have different

stances on social media, but they are often considered helpful for

information exchange and task organization. A growing trend is for

students to use social media in the classroom, as they spend a

significant amount of time using it outside of school. This makes it

practical to connect with students in class, as they are already present

most of the time. The internet world is now a common place for

children to interact with people outside of school, making it a

16

practical choice. In schools and workplaces, children of all ages are

increasingly engrossed in their cell phones, with daily routines

including scrolling through news feeds, posting images on Instagram,

and sending messages on Snapchat. This shift in social media usage is

a testament to the power of social media in shaping our daily lives and

the importance of addressing its negative effects on our education

(Wade, n.d.).

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

Characteristics of the Respondents

Personal Characteristics

Data shows the personal characteristics of the respondents

were presented in table 1 as well as the General Weighted Average

(GWA) of the respondents. The data shows that 92 percent (23) of the

respondents’ age were between 21-23 years old, 84 percent (23) were

female and all were single. In terms of religion, 60 percent (15) of the

respondents were Roman Catholic while 20 percent (5) were Born

Again Christian. Furthermore, the General Weighted Average (GWA)

shows that 60 percent (15) of the respondents (Table 1) got a grade

between 1.50-1.99

Most Used Social Media Sites

The data about the most used social media sites by the

respondents was shown in table 2. The social media sites that got

most of the respondents were Facebook with a mean of 1.68, followed

by Messenger with a mean of 1.8 and Email was the least with a mean

of 4.84. The popularity of Facebook site was the reason of being the

first choice of the respondents. The results indicated that most of the
22

respondents used facebook with specific purpose, they intend to use

this site which make them comfortable and entertained. On the other

hand, email is seldom visited by the respondents since this particular

social media site is used more on sending letter of any purpose or

when dealing with other offices or agencies for legal matters.

According to Dixon (2023) with more than 2.9 billion monthly

active users, market leader Facebook was the first social network to

surpass one billion registered accounts. Four of the largest social

media sites, owned by Meta Platforms, have a combined monthly

active user base of over one billion: Facebook (main platform),

Note: The average rank for each social media site was calculated to analyze the data. The
lower the average rank, the more popular the site is among the students.

Involvement in Social Media Sites

The involvement in social media activities has various

components as used to determine the actual role of the respondents

with respect to the social media site. The results indicate that there

were 92 percent (23) of the respondents who were users of social

media site while there were 88 percent (22) of the respondents

involved as participants in any social media site (table 3). The results

imply that most of the respondents were users of any social media

they intend to use. Those engaged in any on-line activities may end

up as participants or influencer while using the specific social media

site.

Social media engagement has become a crucial component of

any marketing plan as social media platforms develop to reward

genuine social connections. Here's a look at why we believe social

media involvement is so crucial and how you may get over obstacles

Time Spent Using Social Media Platforms Daily

The time spent using social media platforms daily was

determined by asking the respondents of their time using the social

media site. Table 4.1 revealed that respondents were spending 3-4
25

hours or 5-8 hours sometimes in using Facebook. However, rarely that

the respondents spent less than an hour, 1-2 hours, and more than 8

hours in using Facebook. The total mean is 2.456 which means that

the respondents rarely use Facebook beyond the given hours or time.

According to Yaqub M. (2023), the information we obtained, the

average daily time spent on Facebook is around 35.86 minutes. This

number represents the average of data from 7 independent studies

that included average Facebook usage statistics.

In addition, the respondents were using messenger sometimes

in all given hours or time, from less than an hour to more than 8 hours
26

(table 4.2). The total mean for messenger is 2.792 (sometimes). This

indicates that the respondents were using messenger sometimes

longer than the given time for any personal purposes.

Messenger for Facebook is somewhat significant. With the help

of the app, users can communicate cross-platform with companies and

consumers while also sharing gifs, memes, and photographs, making

and receiving video calls, ordinary phone conversations, and voice

notes, and sending and receiving messages with individuals they are

linked to on Facebook or Instagram (Beveridge, 2023).

Furthermore, the respondents rarely spent time more than 8

hours or less than an hour in using tiktok (table 4.3). The total mean is

2.4 which means that respondents rarely use tiktok in any given time

for whatever purpose they may use for.

27

It was the story of how one app—known as TikTok for

international audiences and Douyin for Chinese users—became the

social media platform with the highest growth rate ever. In fact, in

less than four years TikTok has gathered over 3 billion downloads and

reached one-third of all social media users worldwide. It took

Facebook and Instagram almost a decade to reach that level of user

growth; it appears TikTok truly understood how to play the social

media growth game (Dean, 2023).

It indicates that respondents only spent very little time for a specific

issue about their conditions. The total mean is 2.328, rarely condition

that the respondents spent shorter or longer time while using the

social media site.

28

The annual email use research conducted by the software giant

Messenger has a mean of 2.792 (Sometimes) which could due to

communication purposes of the respondents. Tiktok, Gmail/Email and

Instagram were used by the respondents more than enough to

consume their time. YouTube has a mean of 2.776 (Sometimes) which

used by the respondents in watching events that captured their

interests.

In 2022, the average monthly time spent by consumers using

the YouTube mobile app was 23.1 hours. Users in South Korea

engaged with video material on the YouTube app for an average of

around 40 hours per month, while users in India used the app for an

average of about 29 hours per month. In 2022, each users in the

country spent about 21.3 hours on the well-known social video

platform's mobile app (Ceci, 2023).

The fact that Instagram keeps track of how much time you spent

using the app and provides tools to prompt you to leave is a positive

thing. However, it's far too simple to ignore these cautions and keep

scrolling. In order to properly resist temptation, you may want to use

Screen Time on iOS or Digital Wellbeing on Android. These tools can

lock you out of applications (Keeley, 2022).

Purpose of Using Social Media

32

Using social media requires time, therefore the respondents

only use social media during their spare time. Though there are some

important matters to do, the respondents see to it that they manage

their time wisely using gadgets and social media sites. Table 6 below

has the results from the respondents. There are 3 components used in

each social media platform to measure the likeliness of the

respondents. These are entertainment, socialization, and

informativeness. Each components has variables used to measure the

component which leads to purpose of using social media site by the

respondents.

The table 6.1 shows the utilization of Facebook by the

respondents and the informative has the highest mean garnered 3.95

which most students were using for collecting information for their

studies. The lowest mean is entertainment with 2.98 and marked as

neither agree nor disagree rating.

The main goal of Facebook is to promote personal interaction in

online spaces. It enables individual users to quickly and easily connect

with friends and share ideas, news, and multimedia content with

them. Facebook enables users to keep up with their friends and

communicate directly with people through direct messaging. It also

enables users to connect with many of their friends at once through

postings that go out to a specified list of people. It also enables
