A three-year mission to Mars poses significant health risks for astronauts, including exposure to high levels of space radiation, microgravity effects like muscle and bone loss, and psychological challenges from isolation. Communication delays of up to 24 minutes mean astronauts must handle many issues independently, increasing the risk of serious complications. Current technology does not adequately address these dangers, making human missions to Mars unsafe until more advanced solutions are developed.

Taking a trip to Mars for a three-year mission will present astronauts

with a few serious issues. Firstly, exposure to extremely high levels of

space radiation from the lack of Earth's atmospheric shield and
magnetic field can cause an “increased risk of cancer and
degenerative diseases, such as heart disease and cataracts."

Many different health problems can arise as a result of residing in

microgravity for a long period. Muscle and bone loss, vision
impairment, and brain alterations affecting mood and cognition are
some of the consequences faced by astronauts. One of the major
hazards of human spaceflight is "gravity fields," according to NASA,
which large planets and space objects produce due to their large
masses.

Being alone and confined in a small room far from home may create
mental discomfort. In particular, “isolation and confinement" are
principal dangers, which might lead to unsatisfactory performance and
medical issues.

The vast distance between Earth and Mars causes up to 24 minutes of

communication delay. That means that astronauts must confront a lot
of issues on their own without immediate support from mission control.
If a serious malfunction occurs that the astronauts onboard cannot
solve without external guidance, they are COOKED.

Extended time in space may introduce other diseases. It has been

proven by scientific studies that extended missions will also increase
the risk of kidney ailments and other conditions. An article published in
Frontiers in Physiology indicates that "long-term spaceflight may
increase the risk of protein accumulation in susceptible patients
resulting in premature cognitive decline." If an astronaut’s IQ
decreases past a certain time, you’re COOKED.

Overall, in consideration of today's current level of technology and

information, a human mission to Mars is unsafe. Issues such as space
radiation, prolonged exposure to microgravity, psychological factors,
delay in communication, and other medical risks are serious concerns.
Although solutions are being discovered to confront these issues, they
still may not completely negate all the dangers. Therefore, currently, it
is not completely safe to conduct human missions on Mars until more
advanced solutions are obtained.
