Consumer Science

Financial Literacy-

 According to the Financial


Consumer Agency of Canada
(FCAC), financial literacy is having
knowledge, skills, confidence to
make responsible financial
decisions.
 Financial Literacy is the ability to
understand how money works in
the world, how someone makes
money, and effectively use various
financial skills such as budgeting,
investing and saving.

 Budgeting- Estimate the money


needed for your cost of living.

 Investing- Dedication of an asset


to attain an increase in value over
a period of time.

 Saving-Is the income not spent.

NEEDS vs. WANTS

Needs-Essentials, required items for


survival such as place to stay, clothings,
foods.

Wants-Not essential in living, can vary


from one person to the next.

FAMILY RESOURCES

Family Resources-Those which family


possesses/ acquires and make use of in
order to achieve the family goals.

Family is the basic social unit consisting


of parents and their children, considered
as a group, whether dwelling together or
not. An example of a family is a set of
parents living with their children.
Human Resources- those which refer to
family members and what each one of
them acquires, such as skills, strength,
intelligence, etc.

Material Resources- It refers to tangible


assets such as things examples house and
lot, furniture and appliances, jewelry,
automobiles, and cash are referred to as
the family’s material resources. Every
family must invest wisely in material
resources.

Non-material Resources- Time, health,


and experience are intangible resources
but are also important. Without non-
material resources, family members will
be unable to perform their duties and
responsibilities at home, in school, and at
work.

Basic needs-are requirements for


sustaining life and promoting physical
and mental growth for the children
within the family.

CONSUMER SCIENCE

Consumer Science- is a diverse discipline


addressing various aspects of basic
human needs. It explores an individual’s
behavior in relation to food, clothing,
textiles. Housing, nutrition and food
security.

Consumer Sciences Education- tries to


empower individuals and families to
identify and create alternative solutions
to significant everyday challenges and to
take responsibility for the consequences
of their actions in a diverse global society.
These challenges are experienced by
people of all ages in their families,
workplaces, and communities.

From its inception in the nineteenth


century, the field has used knowledge to
improve people's quality of life.
