How to come up with ideas?
Question #1: Some people believe that
television has had a positive influence on
society, while others believe it has had a
negative influence on society. Which do you
agree and why? Use details and examples to
explain your opinion.
Question #2: Do you agree or disagree with
the following statement: people are more
likely to enjoy themselves at concerts or films
if they go with a group of friends?
The “SCI” Space Principle
Sample answer for Q1:

I do believe that TV has had a positive influence on society for

the following reasons. First of all, TV is more dynamic that other
types of media and covers news a lot faster than radio or
newspaper does. This means that if a natural disaster takes place
or a pandemic disease breaks out somewhere on the planet,
people in other parts of the world can be informed sooner
through TV coverage and get better prepared to react or help.
(Society) Also, some programs such as Discovery Channel have
great educational value, individuals can broaden their
perspectives by watching such programs. (Individuals)
The “PCF” Time Principle
Sample answer for Q1:

I think TV, as a great invention in the 20th century, has had a

positive influence on society. In the past, it served as a great
means of entertainment for many people. After a long day’s work
or study, these people chose to sit in front of their TV sets,
watching news, talk shows, music videos, and many more other
types of programs. (Past) Now, the new generation prefer to
spend their time on the internet, but still, TV continues to play as
a great interpersonal relationship management tool, bringing
families together after dinner or during important festival times.
(Current)
The “STR”
Story-telling
Principle
Sample answer for Q2:

I think people are less likely to enjoy concerts or films when they
go with friends. I feel this way because a lot of times when I go
with my friends, either plans go awry or things fly out of handle.
Last December, I went to see the concert of Coco Lee with two of
my best friends. I reserved the tickets online and we agreed to
meet up at the main entrance of the concert hall half an hour
before the show. (Start) However, one friend had a flat tire on her
way to the concert and another went to the back entrance of the
hall and it took us quite a while to eventually meet up and enter
the hall.(Turn) After we were finally seated, we had already
missed out on half of the show. (Result)
The “PEI”
Positives/Negatives principle
Sample answer for Q2:

Well, I do believe that people are more likely to enjoy themselves

when they go to concerts or films with a bunch of friends. First of,
going with friends to these events can be funner. For instance, in
a rock or pop music concert, people do not just sit there and
listen to the songs, they get high and sing along together. If
people go with their friends, the vibe will definitely be better and
they shall have greater fun. (Emotional) Besides, people
sometimes discuss about movies with friends especially when the
movies are good ones. Going to see the movie together makes
sure that everybody has watched the movie and knows what the
discussion is about. (Intellectual)
