● Write your name at the top of each page in the space provided.
● Answer all questions, beginning each new question in the space provided.
● Show all work. Show all formulas used for each problem prior to substitution of numbers. Label
diagrams and include appropriate units for your answers.
● You may use an alphanumeric calculator (one which exhibits physical formulas) during the exam
as long as you do not program any formulas into memory. By using an alphanumeric calculator you
agree to allow us to check its memory during the exam. Simple scientific calculators are always OK!

1-1 The figure shows the graph of the position x as a function of time for an object moving in the
straight line (the x-axis). Which of the following graphs best describes the velocity along the x-axis as
a function of time for this object?
A) B) C) D) E)
1-2 Joy and Faith dive from an overhang into the lake below. Joy simply drops straight down from
the edge. Faith takes a running start and jumps with an initial horizontal velocity of 25 m/s. When
they reach the lake below, the following statement is correct.
E) It is impossible to tell because a numerical value for the initial speed is not given.
1-4 Suppose that a car traveling to the West (-x direction) begins to slow down as it approaches a
traffic light. Make a statement concerning its acceleration.
1-5 Two children are riding on a merry-go-round. Child A is at a greater distance from the axis of
rotation than child B. Which child has the larger tangential (linear) speed?
A) Child A
B) Child B
A car starts from rest and accelerates at a rate of 2.0 m/s2 in a straight line until it reaches a velocity
of 20 m/s. It moves at this constant velocity for 3.0 s, and then slows at a constant rate of 1.0 m/s2
until it comes to a stop.
A) [ 6 points] Draw a motion diagram of the car’s travel for the above case - indicating the velocity
and acceleration vectors.
C) [ 7 points] How far does the car travel from start to stop?
5
Problem 3: (20 points – 4 points for each part)
A particle undergoes motion with non-uniform acceleration. Its velocity is given by:
v =(6 − 14t )iˆ + (12t − 21t 2 ) ˆj (velocity in m/s, t in seconds)
An object is projected from a point at the edge of a cliff that has a height (H) above the ground, with
an initial speed of 185 m/s and at an angle of 71.0o. The object rises to a maximum height, Ymax and
then falls to the ground. The total time of flight of the object in the air is 40.0 s. There is no
appreciable air resistance.
A) Draw a suitable diagram, label the coordinate system and show the trajectory of the object.
Indicate the velocity components – at the initial point where it was projected, at the maximum height,
and at the point where it hits the ground.
C) Determine the horizontal distance that the cliff is from the location where object hits the ground.
