FOREWORD

The Belwin String Builder is a string c 1 m M e W in which the Violin, Viola, C&o and B w play
together throughout. Each b k , however, ia a compleh unit and may be u d w t e l y fm cIasa or
individual inehction.
In th Method, the qumter note approach is adopted not only k u e it is the unit of the beott,
but because it e n c o u m g ~freedom of the bow arm at the outset. Starting from No.15, the o p a stririg
melodies and those that introduce the h t finger serve as an ammpaniment to well-known folk songs
which are written for the piano. This provides m u & d purpose to the melodies and stimdaks rhythmic
i n h e t . A mal1"p" aftm the number indica- that there b a piano.- for t h t melody.
After the fmt fmger, F# and C# me inhduced. This has proven to be m& practimble fmm the
standpoint of tonality and lef t hand finger placement. From this point m, the student phys the a c t a
melodies. However, on Page 20, F natural and C natural are prexnted to deveiop intonaticm and to
more Feadily prepare the pupii for the school orchestra.
