Smart Dustbin for Efficient Waste Management

Objective: To design a smart dustbin that uses sensors and automation to separate waste and provide
notifications when it is full, promoting efficient waste management.

Problem Statement: Waste segregation and proper disposal remain major challenges, especially in urban
areas. Most waste bins don’t separate waste, leading to poor recycling and environmental damage.
Additionally, bins overflow without timely collection, creating unhygienic conditions.

Materials Required:

Ultrasonic sensor

IR sensors for waste detection

Arduino board

Servo motor for lid operation

LED indicators

Buzzer

Waste compartment (for biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste)

Power supply (battery)

Procedure:

Sensor Setup: Install an ultrasonic sensor at the top of the dustbin to detect the level of waste. When the
bin is nearly full, the sensor sends a signal to activate an alert system.

Waste Segregation: Attach IR sensors to detect the type of waste (biodegradable or non-biodegradable)
based on certain properties (such as metal or organic matter). Use servo motors to open the corresponding
compartment of the bin for waste segregation.

Benefits:

Promotes automatic waste segregation, making recycling easier

Reduces the need for manual handling of waste

Helps keep public spaces clean by notifying when the bin is full

Touch-free operation improves hygiene
