PRACTICAL LABORATORY 4 : ELECTRO - HYDRAULICS
TASK 4

THEORY
Electro-hydraulic systems can be used in robust robotics systems that have to carry
heavier loads efficiently.

Electrical drives have proven to be reliable and easy to control, but they may have
problems when it comes to holding a position under load for a long period of time.
Hence, electro-hydraulic systems are gaining more attention in applications that need
good positioning and force feedback.

APPARATUS / Electo-Hydraulic Trainer

EQUIPMENT

SAFETY a. Make sure there is no epose wire from electrical components such as electrical
PRECAUTIONS pump.
b. Avoid to put hand on moving parts like electrical motor and hydraulic cylinder.
c. Do not exceed of working pressure of 5 bars while running the experiments.
d. Do not use the oil leakage components.

TITLE Practice I-a ( Electric )

EXPERIMENT Upon completion this task, students should be able to :

OUTCOME a. The exercise helps get the student acquainted with the practical use of the practice unit
and components.
b. Before starting the first exercise the participant should be informed of the procedure as
well as the security measures involved.
c. construct the actual circuit as per given circuit diagram.
d. report the observation

PROCEDURES A warning lamp of high voltage is to be driven by a miniature switch at remote location. As
the current consumption of the lamp exceeds the switch contact rating the lamp should be
indirectly controlled
RESULT / DATA

TITLE Practice I-b ( Electro-hydraulic- Extension of a cylinder upon the operation of a push-
button )

EXPERIMENT Upon completion this task, students should be able to :

OUTCOME a. build a simple circuit diagram .
b. Indicate types of switching contacts and their classification figure ( normally closed,
changeover switch, normally open)
c. construct the actual circuit as per given circuit diagram.
d. report the observation

DESCRIPTION In this experiment a double-acting cylinder is extend and retract. The extending process is
controlled by operating a push button. When the push button is released, the cylinder retracts
automatically.

PROCEDURES a. Supplement the circuit illustrated below so that a cylinder extends upon the operation of a
push-button.
b. When the push-button is released, the direction valve returns to initial position due to its
spring-centring, and the cylinder retracts.
c. In order to be able to vary the extension velocity, install a throttle and limit the system
pressure by means of a suitable valve.

TITLE Practice II ( Electro-hydraulics- Signal storage by electrical self-locking )

EXPERIMENT Upon completion this task, students should be able to :

OUTCOME a. set-up of an electrical circuit with electrical sign storage
b. learn a circuit diagram for signal storage
c. construct the actual circuit as per given circuit diagram.
report the observation

DESCRIPTION A cylinder is to be extended by means of a push-button impulse. When the push button is
released the cylinder is to continue to extend by means of signal storage until the end
position is reached. The retraction of the cylinder may only be possible when the signal
storage is reset by means of a second push-button

PROCEDURES a. Supplement this circuit so that the cylinder can be extended and retracted by means of
the solenoid operated directional valve.
b. The throttle influences the retracting and extending velocity of the cylinder.

TITLE Practice III ( Electro-hydraulics- Signal storage by electrical self-locking Resetting by
means of a proximity switch )

EXPERIMENT Upon completion this task, students should be able to :

OUTCOME a. set-up of an electrical and hydraulics control, in which electrical self-locking is reset by
means of a proximity switch.
b. practice the function of proximity switches.
c. construct the actual circuit as per given circuit diagram.
d. report the observation

DESCRIPTION This experiment is to demonstrate the function of an inductive proximity switch in practice.
The cylinder is to extend upon the operation of a push button and automatically return with
the help of a proximity switch.
In addition it should be possible during the retraction movement to re-extend the cylinder at
any position by operating a push- button

PROCEDURES Hydraulics Circuit

a. Build a circuit, as shown below which the cylinder retracts and extends when a
directional valve is accordingly controlled.
b. If should be possible to regulate the extending velocity, to set the system pressure and
monitor it via the pressure gauge.

Electric Circuit
a. Complete the electric circuit diagram so that the directional valve ( Y1 ) shifts when
push button-button S5 is operated.
b. This switching impulse is to be stored by electrical self-locking
c. The cylinder retracts automatically, when proximity switch B1 switches and thus resets
the self-locking function.
Explain the observation during the practical task.
