LAB 2 (1) 2

The document outlines a series of practical laboratory tasks focused on electro-pneumatics and hydraulics for mechanical engineering students. Each task aims to develop skills in setting up and commissioning electro-pneumatic systems, with specific outcomes and procedures for single-acting and double-acting cylinders. Safety precautions are emphasized, and students are expected to report their observations and conclusions after each experiment.

DJJ 40153 PNEUMATIC & HYDRAULICS

PRACTICAL LABORATORY 2 : ELECTRO - PNEUMATIC
TASK 2

THEORY Electro pneumatics is successfully used in many areas of industrial automation.

Production, assembly and packing systems worldwide are driven by electro pneumatic
control system.

In contrast to a purely pneumatic control system, electro pneumatic controllers are not
shown in any single overall circuit diagram, but in two separate circuit diagrams – one for
the electrical part and one for the pneumatic part. For this reason, signal flow is not
immediately clear from the arrangement of the components in the overall circuit diagram.

APPARATUS / Electro - Pneumatic Training Set

EQUIPMENT

SAFETY 1. Make sure the student follow the laboratory or workshop safety regulators.
PRECAUTIONS 2. Experiment must be conduct by lecturers or experience lab assistance

TITLE Electro-pneumatics Practice I

( Command- variable control of a single-acting cylinder with spring return valve )

EXPERIMENT Upon completion this task, students should be able to :

OUTCOME
a. Know anddevelop skill on setting up and commissioning an electro-pneumatics control
using the example of the a direct electric activation of a single-acting cylinder.
b. construct the actual circuit as per given circuit diagram.
c. report the observation.

PROCEDURES The piston of a single – acting cylinder is to travel forward when a push button is pressed.
When the push-button is released the cylinder is to return to the retracted end position which
is also the initial start position
RESULT / DATA

TITLE Electro-pneumatics Practice II
( Command- variable control of a double-acting cylinder with spring return valve )

EXPERIMENT Upon completion this task, students should be able to :

OUTCOME
a. demonstrates the control of a double –acting cylinder with a electrically controlled, spring
return 5/2 directional control valve without the use of a relay.
b. construct the actual circuit as per given circuit diagram.
c. report the observation.

OUTCOME
a. practice various possible circuit with latching ( storage circuit) in relay technology.
b. construct the actual circuit as per given circuit diagram.
c. report the observation.

TITLE Pneumatic Practice IV ( Displacement-dependent control of a double-acting cylinder,
impulse valve, cylinder switch )

EXPERIMENT Upon completion this task, students should be able to :

OUTCOME
a. conveys knowledge on the application of relay in electro-pneumatic controls .
b. construct the actual circuit as per given circuit diagram.
c. report the observation of experiment.

PROCEDURES Task ( “Testing the life span of upholstered furniture”)

Cylinder switch and an electrically controlled 5/2 directional control impulse valve are used in
this displacement-dependent control of a double-acting cylinder.
The valve solenoids are controlled through relay contacts and not directly through the
signaling elements.

Upholstered furniture are to be tested on their life span.

d. After actuating control switch S3 ( continuous cycle), the piston rod of a double acting
cylinder Z1 extends and after reaching the front end position retracts again. This
procedure repeats itself as long as switch S3 remains “ON”
e. Additional requirement: after briefly actuating push button S0 the cylinder should
extend and retract once ( single cycle )
f. It should be possible to reduce the extension speed
g. An electrically controlled 5/2 directional control valve impulse valve is used as an
actuator. Cylinder switches are available as limit switch
h. The functional diagram is to be draw up, the pneumatic circuit diagram supplemented,
the electric circuit diagram is to drawn up using the symbols of electrical equipment
according to DIN/ISO
