Underground Sump Tank

The document outlines the design specifications for an underground sump, including dimensions, material grades, and permissible stresses. It details calculations for maximum cantilever moments and required steel reinforcement for both full and empty tank conditions. The design specifies the use of 16 mm bars at various spacings for vertical and horizontal reinforcement to ensure structural integrity under different loading scenarios.

(Design of Under ground Sump)

DATA Assumed
1. Maximum depth of water in tank+ 4.0 m
2.Size of Tank 40X 40 X4.5m & 50 X 46 X 4.5 m
3. Grade of Concrete : M30
4. Grade of Steel : Fe – 415.
5. Permissible stresser in steel renforcenment 65 t
a) (tension away from water face ) = 190 N/mm2
b) Tension on water face water 6 st = 150 N/mm2
6. unit weight of water 6 st = 10 KN/m3
7. permissible stresser in concrete in
Bending tension ( M30 grades)=2 N /mm2
8. Unit weight of moist earth retained = 18 KN/M3
9. Angle of repose of retained earth = Ø = 30°
10. Co efficient of active earth pressure Ka = 1- Sin 30 = 1
1+Sin 30 3

11. Design constants J+ 0.893, R+1.47 for 6st = 190 N/mm 2

& J=0.872 & R = 1.67 for 6st = 150 N/mm2
Since the L/H & B/H rates for both the tanks is greater than 2 (
The walls of tanks are designed as verfical contrlevers fixed at base.
(conditions-I)
Tank full no earth pressure from out side
maximum cantilever moments= WH 3
6
= 10 X 43/6 +106.67 KNm
Using the relation M=F2
Depth required for no crack condition is given by

106.67 X 10 = 2 X 1 X 1000 X D2
6
D2 = 106.67 X 10 6 X 6
2 X 1000
D = √ 320010
=565.69 mm
Provide D + 600 mm
Effective depth required from cracked conditions
Is given by M =R b d2
D= √ M❑+10 6
Rb
D= √ 106.67❑ X 106
1.470 X 1000

D = 269.38 mm

Hence provide total depth of 600 mm

From no crack condition.

Allowing clear cover of 45 mm effective depth

Available considering 20 mm
Bars = 545 mm

In this care tension is on water face hence 6st =150 N/mm 2 J=0.893

Area of steel required A87 = M

6 st Jd

= 106.67 X 10 6
150 X 0.893 X 545

= 1461.18 mm2
Spacing using for 16 mm bars

= 201 X1000 + 137.56 mm

1461.18

Provide 16 mm @ 100 mm/C in vertical

Direction on water face.
Condition II:- Tank empty & earth pressure from outside
Man cantilever moment = 1 X ka X Y h 3
2 6
=1 X 1 X 18 X 4
2 3 6

= 64 KNm

In this care 6st = 190 N/mm2 , j =0.872

Area of steel required A87 = M
6st jd

= 64 X 10 6
190 X 0.872 X 545

708.78 mm2

Minimum steal required = 0.35 X 1000 X 250 (As depth is greater than 500 mm)
100

= 875.00 mm2

Spacing using 16 mm bars

= 201 X 1000
875

= 229.71 mm

Provide 16 mm bars @ 150 mmC/C in vertical direction in earth side

Distribution Steel:- Minimum steel required is 0.35 bd = 875.00 mm 2 as

calculated above Hence provided 16 mm bars @ 150 mm C/C in horizontal
direction on both faces i.e. water side & earth side
