PYQs LIFE PROCESSES
MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS: (5 x 1 =
5)
1. Opening and closing of stomata is due to:
a. High pressure of gases inside the cells.
b. Movement of water in and out of the guard cells.
c. Stimulus of light in the guard cells.
d. Diffusion of CO 2 in and out of the guard cells.
2. Observe the following diagram and identify the process and its significance from the

a. Evaporation: maintains water content in leaf cells.

b. Transpiration: creates a suction force which pulls
water inside the plant.
c. Excretion: helps in excreting out waste water from
the plant.
d. Translocation: helps in transporting materials from
one cell to another.

following options:
3. Which of the following statement(s) is (are) true about human heart?
a. Right atrium receives oxygenated blood from lungs through pulmonary artery.
b. Left atrium transfers oxygenated blood to left ventricle which sends it to various parts of
the body.
c. Right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from different parts of the body through Vena
Cava.
d. Left atrium transfers oxygenated blood to aorta, which sends it to different parts of the
body.
4. Select true statements about lymph from the following:
A. Lymph vessels carry lymph through the body and finally open in two larger
arteries.
B. Lymph contains some amount of plasma proteins and blood cells.
C. lymph contains some amount of plasma proteins and red blood cells.
D. lymph vessels carry lymph through the body and finally open in two larger veins.
5. Plants like rose and banana have the lost the capacity to produce:
a. Flowers
b. Buds
c. Seeds
d. Fruits
ASSERTION AND REASONING BASED QUESTIONS: (2 x 1 = 2)
a. Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
b. Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A.
c. A is true, but R is false.
d. A is false, but R is true.
1. Assertion(A): The inner walls of the small intestine have finger like projections called
villi, which are rich in blood.
Reason(R): These villi have a large surface area to help the small intestine in
completing the digestion of food.
2. Assertion(A): In large animals, oxygen can reach different parts of the animal’s body
easily.
Reason(R): Respiratory pigments take up oxygen from the air and carry it to body
tissues.
VERY SHORT TYPE QUESTIONS: (2 x 2 = 4)
1. Write one specific function of each of the following organs in relation with
excretion in human beings:
a. Renal Artery: The renal arteries carry a large volume of blood from the heart
to the kidneys.
b. Urethra: This tube allows urine to pass outside the body.
c. Glomerulus: As blood flows into each nephron, it enters a cluster of tiny blood
vessels—the glomerulus. The thin walls of the glomerulus allow smaller
molecules, wastes, and fluid—mostly water—to pass into the tubule. Larger
molecules, such as proteins and blood cells, stay in the blood vessel.
d. Tubular part of nephron: The major function of tubules is reabsorption and the
process can either be through active transport or passive transport.
2. Two green plants are kept separately in oxygen free containers, one in the dark
and other in sunlight. It was observed that plant kept in dark could not survive
longer. Give reason for this observation.

Ans: We know that plant release carbon dioxide during respiration. In case of
plant which Is being kept in dark, carbon dioxide will accumulate in the container.
This will finally result in lack of oxygen for the plant and plant would die. In case
of plant which is being kept In light, carbon dioxide shall be utilized during
photosynthesis and Oxygen will be released. This will help in maintaining the
availability of oxygen for respiration. As a result, this plant will live longer.
SHORT ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS: (3 x 3 = 9)
1. i. How does paramecium obtain it is food?
Ans: Paramecium uses its hair-like structures called Cilia to sweep the food
particles from water and put them into its mouth. The Paramecium has thin hair-
like Cilia all over its body. The Cilia moves back and forth rapidly in water. When
the Cilia present around the mouth region of Paramecium move back and forth,
they sweep the food particles present in water into the mouth of Paramecium.
ii. List the role of each of the following:
a. Hydrochloric Acid: The function of hydrochloric acid in the stomach is to make
the medium of gastric juice acidic so that the enzyme pepsin can digest the
proteins properly. Another function of hydrochloric acid is that it kills any
bacteria which may enter the stomach with food.
b. Trypsin: Trypsin is a pancreatic enzyme which plays a vital role in protein
digestion in the small intestine by breaking down large protein molecules into
smaller peptides and amino acids.
c. Muscular Walls of Stomach: The muscular walls of the stomach churn and mix
food, move it to the small intestine and regulate the rate at which food leaves
the stomach.
d. Salivary amylase: Salivary amylase is an enzyme that is present in the saliva of
humans and some other mammals, that begins the digestion of carbohydrates
and food by breaking down starch into sugars.
2. i. What is double circulation?
Ans: Double circulation is a circulatory system where blood passes through the
heart twice during 1 cycle. It is also known as the double loop circulatory system.
ii. Why is separation of the right side and the left side of the heart useful? How
does it help birds and mammals?
Ans: The separation of the left and right sides of the heart and birds and
mammals prevents the mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, ensuring a
constant and efficient supply of oxygen. This is essential for their energy needs
and for maintaining a stable body temperature, as they are warm blooded
animals.
3. What is the first step cellular respiration? In which part of the cell does it occur ?
Write the equation for the process of breakdown of glucose in a human cell?
Ans: The first step of cellular respiration is Glycolysis. It occurs in the cytoplasm of
the cell. Following is the equation that represents the breakdown of one glucose
molecule into two pyruvate molecules, releasing energy int the form of ATP and
NADH:
C 6 H 12 O6 → C3 H 4 O3 +2 ATP+2 NADH
Glucose Pyruvate

SOURCE BASED / CASE BASED QUESTIONS: (4 x 1 = 4)

1. Human digestive system is a tube running from mouth to anus. It is main function
is to break down complex molecules present in the food which cannot be
absorbed as such into smaller molecules. These molecules are absorbed across
the walls of the tube and the absorbed food reaches each cell of the body where
it is utilised for obtaining energy.
a) Name the glands present in the buccal cavity and write the components of food on
which the secretion of these glands acts upon.
Ans: The gland present in the buccal cavity is the salivary gland. The
salivary glands secret saliva which contains enzymes that act on
carbohydrates and fats. The main components of food on which the
secretion of these glands acts are starches (carbohydrates) and lipids (fats).
b) Two organs have a sphincter muscle at their exit. Name them.
Ans: The stomach and the anus have a sphincter muscle at their exit.
c) What will happen if:
i) Mucus is not secreted by the gastric glands.
Ans: If the gastric glands in the stomach do not secrete mucus, the
stomach lining can erode and develop ulcers which can lead to acidity.
ii) Villi are absent in the small intestine.
Ans: The absence of these villis will decrease nutrient and digested
food absorption by intestinal walls leading to severe nutritional
disorders.
d) “ Bile juice does not contain any enzyme, yet it has important roles in digestion.”
Justify the statement.
Ans: Although bile juice does not contain any enzyme, it is still important for
digestion because it helps breakdown fats and makes the environment alkaline for
digestive enzymes to act.
