CONDITIONAL SENTENCES OR IF CLAUSES
What are conditional sentences?
These are sentences that are used to express possibilities.
Why are conditional sentences called “if sentences or if clauses”?
Conditional sentences are also called “if sentences” because they use “if” as their subordinating
conjunction though not always.
NB: A subordinating conjunction is a conjunction that introduces a subordinate clause or
dependent clauses or in other words a conjunction that acts as the beginning point of a
subordinate clause more especially subordinate adverbial clauses of condition.
Conditional sentences are adverbial clauses of condition therefore they contain both the
main clause and the subordinate clause.
Below are some of the words that can be used instead of “if”:-
Unless
Provided
In case
Had
If only
Supposing
On condition that
As long as
Should
Examples:-
1. They will enjoy the match provided they watch.
In this sentence the condition is that the people must watch match
in order to enjoy
3. The helicopter would have caught fire had he continued with the flight.
In this sentence the helicopter did not catch fgfht on condition that
the figfht did not continue.

present tense hence the result has taken the future tense “will offer”
iii. If I propose this girl for you I will receive plenty of money.
In this example, our condition “if I propose this girl for you” has the verb “propose” in
