LESSON NUMBER 3 DATE: 4 APRIL, 2020.
CONDITIONAL SENTENCES OR IF CLAUSES
What are conditional sentences?
 These are sentences that are used to express possibilities.
Why are conditional sentences called “if sentences or if clauses”?
 Conditional sentences are also called “if sentences” because they use “if” as their subordinating
conjunction though not always.
NB: A subordinating conjunction is a conjunction that introduces a subordinate clause or
dependent clauses or in other words a conjunction that acts as the beginning point of a
subordinate clause more especially subordinate adverbial clauses of condition.
 Conditional sentences are adverbial clauses of condition therefore they contain both the
main clause and the subordinate clause.
 Below are some of the words that can be used instead of “if”:-
 Unless
 Provided
 In case
 Had
 If only
 Supposing
 On condition that
 As long as
 Should
Examples:-
1. They will enjoy the match provided they watch.
In this sentence the condition is that the people must watch match
in order to enjoy

2. Unless she accepts my proposal she will suffer the consequences.

In this sentence the condition is that one has to accept to avoid
sufferingf the conse uences.

3. The helicopter would have caught fire had he continued with the flight.
In this sentence the helicopter did not catch fgfht on condition that
the figfht did not continue.

4. They will win as long as they play well.

In this sentence playingf well is the condition for them to win.

5. They would succeed if only they studied hard.

6. Supposing that you were my husband would you kiss me in public?
In this sentence the speaker will be kissed on the condition that the
addressee is her husband

7. I will go on condition that you give me some money.

In this sentence the speaker will embark on her journey on the
condition that she is gfiven some money.

8. Should they come, I will give them gifts.

In this sentence money will be gfiven to the people beingf referred
on condition that they come to the speaker’s place.
NB: Please note that when analyzed; the subordinate clause becomes
the condition and the remainingf part which is obviously the main clause
becomes the result. This means that when we are dealingf with
conditional sentences we pay our attention to these two: condition and
result.
Please note that for better understanding of Conditional sentences one must have
a good knowledge of verb tenses and clauses.
RULES FOR CONDITION SENTENCES
There are three basic rules for conditional sentences as follows:
Rule Number One
If the condition (subordinate clause) is in the present tense, the result (main clause) takes a future
tense.
 This conditional sentence is used to talk about consequences of a possible action.
Examples:-
i. If I finish my work this afternoon, I will go to Mulanje Park in the evening.
 In this example, our condition “if I finish my work this afternoon” has the verb “finish”
in the present tense hence the result has taken the future tense “will go”.

ii. She will offer you this contract if you finalise this project.
 In this example, our condition “if you finalise this project” has the verb “finalise” in the
present tense hence the result has taken the future tense “will offer”

iii. If I propose this girl for you I will receive plenty of money.
 In this example, our condition “if I propose this girl for you” has the verb “propose” in
the present hence the result has taken the future tense “will receive.”
