Q1: The degradation of pollutant C in a water treatment process is monitored over

time. According to a published study, the concentration of C should decrease with
time according to the following relationship:
[
/50]
C A=C A 0 exp ⁡(−kt ) eq.1

Where CA0 is the initial concentration of A and k is the rate constant.

The experiment was repeated twice and the results of both experiments are
presented in the following table

t (s) CA (lbm/L)
Run # 1 Run # 2
10 1.423 1.641
20 1.167 1.328
30 1.021 1.063
40 0.832 0.922
60 0.594 0.563
100 0.266 0.281
200 0.0313 0.064

For the given sets of data, use the spreadsheet program (Excel) to answer
each part of the following:
1. Plot each run on rectangular coordinates and verify the proposed
relationship (eq. 1).
2. What plot would yield a straight line on a rectangular coordinate?
3. If the published value of CA0 was 1.302 lbm/L comment on the results
obtained from each run
4. For each time, calculate the mean value of the concentration set of
data, and plot the data on semilog coordinates.
5. For the same set of data calculated in point 4, use the chart function to
find the equation that best fits a linear relationship between them on a
rectangular coordinate. Clearly label your axis
6. Comment on the results obtained in steps 4 and 5
7. Use Two-point linear interpolation and the equation function to find the
concentration at 132 s for the mean set of data.
8. Repeat step 7 using the best-fit equation found in step 5. Comment on
your result

Please note: all your calculations MUST be done using the equation
function in the spreadsheet program.

Q2: The equation for the depth of flow is given b:

[ /4]

h2
[√ ]
2
0.8 S
h1 = 1+ 4
−5
2 h2

h1= height at point 1, m

h2= height at point 2, m

What are the units for S & 1?

Q3: The Poiseuille’s equation for laminar flow is as follows:

[ /6]
2
hf ρ g D
μ=
32 L um

Where:
hf is the friction head (m)
L is the length of a capillary tube (m)
D is the tube diameter (m)
 is the fluid density Kg/m3)
 is the fluid dynamic viscosity (N s/m)
g is the gravitational acceleration (m/s2)
um is the average velocity (m/s)

Derive an equation for  in (lbf s/ft) in terms of  in (lbm/ft3)
