How to Solder

Soldering is a process
that creates an electrical
and mechanical
connection between two
wires or components.
How to Solder

1. Preparation
2. Making a Solder Joint
3. Desoldering
4. Finishing
Preparation

1. Put on safety glasses - must

ALWAYS be worn!
2. Wet the sponge - damp but
not dripping
3. Set up and turn on exhaust
fan - place it close to where
you will be working
Preparation

4. Heat the iron - set to 460° F

5. Clean the iron - wipe off dirt
on wet sponge
6. Tin the tip -
a. melt solder on tip
b. wipe tip on wet sponge
c. should be shiny and
smooth
Preparation

7. Secure parts -
a. vise
b. third hand
c. other methods
Making a Solder Joint

1. Apply heat - touch the tip of

the iron to both components
at the same time
a. this may take several
seconds
Making a Solder Joint

2. Apply solder - touch the end

of the solder to the
components
a. solder should NOT touch
the iron
Making a Solder Joint

3. Let solder flow - keep the

iron in place until solder has
filled the joint, then remove
the iron a good solder
joint is shiny
4. Make adjustments - and smooth!

a. use iron to wipe away

excess solder or smooth
out solder
Desoldering

1. Heat the joint - until the solder is melted

2. Remove solder - using soldering iron, soldering vacuum, or
soldering wick / braid
3. Remove the parts - quickly, before the solder hardens, use
pliers to hold parts securely while pulling them apart
4. Repeat - until the components are separated
Desoldering

Ways of removing solder -

a. Soldering iron - the tip can be used
to “wipe” solder off of a joint.
b. Soldering Vacuum - used to remove
melted solder from a board
c. Soldering wick or braid
Finishing

1. Tin the tip - protects from dirt

and oxidation
2. Turn off soldering iron - will
stay hot for several minutes
3. Turn off exhaust fan
4. Turn off power strip
Finishing

4. Clean up - bits of solder, wire,

insulation, or other parts
5. Put away - all tools and
materials
6. Wash hands - remove lead
and other materials
