ING004-Interview Behavioural questions using STAR
STAR stands for situation, task, action and result. Hiring managers ask behavioural interview questions to
determine whether you are the right fit for a job.
1. Tell me about a time you had a conflict with someone. How did you resolve it, and what did you
learn?
2. Tell me about a time you failed. How did you deal with the situation?
3. Tell me about a time you set a goal for yourself. How did you meet your objective?
4. Give me an example of a time when you were able to successfully persuade someone at work to
see things your way.
5. Share an example of a time you had to make a difficult decision. What did you do?
6. Have you ever had to motivate others? How did you do it?
7. Tell me about a time when you received tough or critical feedback.
8. Tell me about something you’ve accomplished that you are proud of.
Add some sample questions that you think you may get asked at interview. Noting just the key points of
your answer, not the full script, will help you to recall what you need to include should a similar question be
asked.
Share an example of a time when you faced a difficult problem at work. How did you solve this problem?
Situation: “I was working as a retail manager at a department store during prom season. A customer
purchased a dress online and had it delivered to the store. One of my associates accidentally put the dress
out on the floor, where another customer immediately purchased it.
Task: I knew I needed to make this right for the customer to meet my own service level standards and to
uphold the reputation of the company.
Action: Before calling the customer to let her know about the mistake, I located the same dress at another
store location nearby. I ordered it to be pressed and delivered to her home the morning of prom, along
with a gift card to thank her for her understanding.
Result: The customer was so thankful, she wrote us a five-star review on several review sites.”
PRACTICE:
Choose some of the questions from the list in the previous page. Gather your notes and try answering the
question.
Remember, over-scripted or rehearsed answers may come across as insincere and lacking in spontaneity.
