Apparatus Required
Stand with clamp, burette, pipette, funnel, white glazed tile, titration flask.

Chemicals Required
Given sodium hydroxide solution, N /10 or M/20 oxalicacid, phenolphthalein.
Theory
A known volume (10 ml) of oxalic acid is taken in titration flask. Oxalic acid
solution is titrated against sodium
hydroxide solution taken in burette. The chemical reaction taking place is as follows :
COOH COONa
·2H,0+ 2NaOH +4H,0
COOH COONa
Hydrated oxalic acid Sodium hydroxide Sodium oxalate
Oxalic acid is a weak acid and sodium hydroxide is a strong base. Hence, phenolpthalein is used as

If normality is given : The normality of sodium hydroxide solution is
calculated by using the formula,
N,V, = N,V,. Then strength of sodium hydroxide solution is calculated by using the formula,
Strength =Normality x Equivalent weight
If molarity is given : The molarity of sodium hydroxide solution is
calculated by formula, n, M,V, = nM,V. The
strength of sodium hydroxide solution is then calculated by using the formula,
Strength =Molarity x Molecular weight
Procedure
(i) Take a burette and wash it with water. Rinse it with
sodium hydroxide solution.
(iü) Fillthe burette with sodium hydroxide solution and note the
initial reading (V; ).

Apparatus Required
Slandwith clamp, burette, pipette, white glazed tile, titration flask.
Chemicals Required
Given hydrochloric acid, N/10 or M/20 sodium carbonate solution, methylorange.
Theory
10 ml of sodium carbonate solution is taken in a titration flask. This solution is titrated
against hydrochloric acid
with methylorange as indicator.

The end point is indicated by change in colour from yellow to light pink.
Ifnormality is given : The normality of hydrochloric acid is calculated by using the following formula

The strength of HCl can then be calculated by the following formula :
Strength of HCl solution = Molarity x Molecular weight
Procedure
(i) Takea burette and wash it thoroughly. Rinse and fill it with HClsolution, Note the
initial burette reading (V, ).
(ii) Rinse the pipette with standard sodium carbonate solution and pipette out 10 ml of this
solution into a washed
titration flask.

(iv) Place the titration flask just below the nozzle of the burette over a
white glazed tile.
(v) Add hydrochloric acid from the burette dropwise into the titration flask
with continuous shaking until the
colour of the solution just changes from yellow to pink. Note the final burette
reading (Vy).
