Hongjie WANG Reference Letter
Hongjie WANG Reference Letter
September 20th,2023
To whom it may concern,
I'm writing this letter to assist you in understanding Hongjie WANG's performance in the 4-week long
intensive Machine Learning and Data Science program. It consists of two sessions online and eight
sessions onsite with all students and teaching team meeting in person. I've included a program summary
for your reference and to provide you with an idea of what the student has accomplished in this program.
The program covered the concepts in machine learning and data science with a focus on application
development. Specifically, students have learned about the most common Python frameworks like Scikit-
learn, TensorFlow, Keras, and PyTorch. The students have implemented a wide range of machine learning
algorithms in these frameworks with a focus on deep learning and neural networks. Students have, for
example, implemented different forms of recurrent neural networks (LSTM, GRU), and generative
adversarial neural networks. The class also focused on convolutional neural networks and auto encoders
and other methods of generative machine learning like generative adversarial networks. In the last two
lectures the students learned about the basics of natural language processing, language models in general,
transforms and the attention mechanism. Students were asked to complete a python programming
assignment throughout the program individually, which contains three main parts: theoretical derivation
of algorithms, code implementation of algorithms, and conducting experiments with coding. The purpose
of the assignment is to provide students with a chance to apply what they have learned in class to real
problems and to help them lay a solid foundation for the final project. For the final project, the students
had to implement a larger neural network application using generative adversarial networks including a
graphical user interface using TensorFlow/Keras and PyTorch.
Hongjie was perfect in attendance. He was one of the most active students in class participation. His
comments and questions consistently provided insightful and constructive contributions to the class
dialogue. He shared freely and willingly personal observations and experiences that added to the course
understanding and that was stimulating to class discussions. He was attentive, a good listener, and well
prepared with a consistent level of interest. Additionally, he was an active contributing member in an
assigned small group.
The student worked in groups on their assignment each week. They wrote a paragraph of coding and
submitted the results as the homework. He treated the assignments seriously and finished them in a good
standard.
All students in this program needed to complete a final project with two portions, an oral presentation,
and a written report. He was in Group 3 and the final topic was about about cycleGAN. They implemented
the model for image style transformation and analyzed in detail. Both the paper and oral presentation
were examples of a fascinating and most worthy research project.
I hope Hongjie WANG can pursue further study in this field. If there are any specific questions I can
answer about Hongjie WANG's performance in my program, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
