Personal Statement

As a child, I dreamed of becoming many things, an engineer, a scientist, a doctor, but one thread
tied these aspirations together: I wanted to solve real-world problems. Today, as a chemist, I’ve
found my purpose: crafting molecules to heal, innovate, and transform lives.

Chemistry found me early. In high school, a passionate teacher turned the periodic table into a
storybook. She showed us how aspirin eases pain, how catalysts speed up reactions, and how tiny
molecular changes can save lives. That spark of curiosity became a wildfire. I craved to decode
the language of atoms, design molecules with purpose, and bridge the gap between lab
discoveries and societal needs.

My academic journey began at the University of Malakand, where I earned my Bachelor’s in

Chemistry with distinction (CGPA: 3.87/4.00). Here, I fell in love with the elegance of organic
synthesis, how simple reactants, under precise conditions, transform into complex, life-saving
compounds. But my Master’s at Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan (CGPA: 3.69/4.00) ignited
my ambition. Working alongside seasoned researchers, I synthesized heterocyclic compounds
like Thiadiazine Thione derivatives and explored their potential biological activities such as anti-
cancer and antimicrobial properties. These projects taught me to optimize reactions for
efficiency, balance time and cost with yield, characterize compounds using UV-Vis, FTIR,
NMR, MS and link molecular structures to biological activity.

Now, as a co-author of two papers published in international journals, I have contributed to

disseminating findings on the synthesis and bioactivity of novel compounds. I am also polishing
manuscripts from my research, including review articles analyzing synthetic strategies and
biological applications for thiadiazine thione, dihydropyrazole, and synthetic anti-breast cancer
agents, which are currently under submission. These reviews deepened my understanding of
structure-activity relationships and therapeutic gaps, further refining my ability to critically
evaluate and bridge gaps in medicinal chemistry research. Every late night in the lab, every
failed reaction that led to a breakthrough, deepened my obsession with chemistry’s power to
rewrite human health.

While synthesizing compounds, I faced puzzles that kept me awake: How can we design smarter
catalysts to make drug production sustainable and affordable? Can tweaking a single functional
group amplify a molecule’s therapeutic impact? These questions drive me to pursue a Ph.D. in
Organic Chemistry. Your program’s focus on “Design of New Chiral Catalysts for
Intermolecular Reactions” and cutting-edge facilities like “Institute of Chemical Research of
Catalonia” align perfectly with my goals. I’m particularly inspired by Professor Antonio
Echavarren’s work on “H-Bonded Counterion-Directed Enantioselective Au(I) Catalysis
topic,” and I’m eager to collaborate on projects that merge synthetic innovation with real-world
impact. ICIQ’s interdisciplinary environment and emphasis on translational research would
allow me to refine my skills in asymmetric catalysis while addressing global health challenges
through sustainable methodologies."
Beyond the bench, I thrive in collaboration. During my Master’s, I led team projects, presented
findings at seminars, and mentored juniors in the lab. Science, to me, is a dialogue—a blend of
curiosity, critique, and shared discovery. Your program’s collaborative culture, paired with its
global network, excites me. ICIQ’s commitment to fostering international collaborations and its
role in advancing catalytic chemistry align with my vision of science as a collective endeavor.
I’m ready to learn from peers, contribute fresh perspectives, and grow as a scientist.

Looking ahead, I aim to pioneer sustainable drug development in the pharmaceutical industry. A
Ph.D. from your university will arm me with the expertise to tackle challenges like antibiotic
resistance and eco-friendly synthesis. Long-term, I envision leading a research hub where
academia and industry converge to turn molecules into miracles.

In closing, chemistry is more than my career; it’s my language for problem-solving. I’m ready to
embrace the rigor of doctoral research, to ask bold questions, and to craft solutions that matter.
Thank you for considering my application. Together, I believe we can turn molecules into
meaningful change. ICIQ’s mission to train scientists who bridge fundamental discovery and
societal impact resonates deeply with my aspirations. Contributing to Prof. Echavarren’s group
would empower me to advance enantioselective catalysis while driving progress toward eco-
friendly pharmaceutical solutions.

Sincerely,
Fazal Habib
