GEME The teacher distributes strips containing
NT sentence fragments.
Learners will match two fragments to form a
logical compound sentence that shows cause
and effect.
The teacher facilitates a discussion by asking:
What do these sentences express?
What words connect the two ideas?
What happens if we remove these
words?

C. Explai Definition of a Compound Sentence:

n A compound sentence consists of at least two
independent clauses joined by a coordinating
conjunction or a semicolon. Each clause can
stand alone as a complete sentence.
Example: "I wanted to go for a walk, but it
started to rain."
Common Conjunctions Used to Express
Cause and Effect:
For: Presents a reason or explanation.
Example: "She was tired, for she had been
working all day."
So: Indicates a result or consequence.
Example: "He studied diligently, so he passed
the exam."
Therefore: Shows a logical conclusion or
result.
Example: "The weather was unfavorable;
therefore, the event was postponed."
Examples of Compound Sentences:
"The team trained hard, so they won the
championship."
"She didn't feel well, yet she attended the
meeting."
"He enjoys reading novels, and he writes short
stories."
Learners Answer Comprehension
Questions Related to the Sample Passage:
Sample Passage: "The city council
implemented new traffic regulations,
for there were numerous accidents at
the intersection."
Comprehension Questions:
1. Identify the independent clauses in the
sentence.
"The city council implemented new
traffic regulations"
"There were numerous accidents at the
intersection"
2. What coordinating conjunction is used,
and what relationship does it indicate?
The conjunction "for" is used,
indicating a reason or cause.
Rewrite the sentence using
"therefore" instead of "for."
"There were numerous accidents at the
intersection; therefore, the city council
implemented new traffic regulations."
3. Teacher Asks Guiding Questions to
Reinforce Understanding:
What is the purpose of using coordinating
conjunctions?
Coordinating conjunctions connect words,
phrases, or independent clauses of equal
importance, creating a relationship between
them. They help in forming compound
sentences, allowing writers to combine related
ideas and convey complex thoughts effectively.
How do these words affect the meaning of
the sentence?
Coordinating conjunctions clarify the
relationship between connected clauses,
indicating how ideas are related.
By selecting appropriate coordinating
conjunctions, writers can precisely convey the
intended relationship between ideas,
enhancing the clarity and coherence of their
writing.
D Elabo D. ELABORATE (Practicing new skills #2)
. ration Activity: "Cause-and-Effect Chain"
Directions:
Each group is given a starting sentence (e.g.,
"Many people burn forests, so...").
Groups will extend the sentence by adding
another cause-and-effect statement, creating a
chain reaction.
They will present their "Cause-and-Effect
Chain" to the class, explaining the connections
between ideas.

IV.GENERALI A compound sentence is made up of two

ZATIONS independent clauses joined by a coordinating
conjunction, such as so, for, and therefore, to
express a cause-and-effect relationship.
These conjunctions help link ideas logically,
showing how one event leads to another.

For example:
The streets were flooded, for it rained heavily
all night.
Ana studied diligently, so she passed the exam
with high marks.
Factories emit too much smoke; therefore, air
pollution has increased.
By using compound sentences, we can create
clearer and more connected thoughts in
both speaking and writing. This skill helps in
effective communication, allowing us to
explain reasons and results more logically in
everyday conversations, academic discussions,
and written texts.
