12.3.4 The simple future / Μέλλοντας στιγμιαίος


The simple future describes an action or event that will take place in the future without being
interested in its duration. Duration and repetition are expressed by the future continuous. The use of
the particle “θα” before the verb characterizes both future tenses.

Αύριο θα φτιάξω ένα κέικ. I shall make a cake tommorow.


Θα πληρώσω αύριο το λογαριασμό. I shall pay the bill tommorow.

12.3.4.1 Formation of the simple future of the active voice


Verbs of the 1st and the 2nd conjugation
Characteristics
The simple future of the verbs of the active voice can be formed by using: the particle “θα”, the stem
of the past tense of the active voice and the personal endings of the present tense of the active voice.

Formation steps
The verbs διαβάζω (read), γράφω (write), αγαπώ (love), τηλεφωνώ (telephone) are used as examples:
1. Find the past stem of the active voice of the verb.
Group A, 1st conjugation Group B, 2nd conjugation, B1, B2
διαβάζω - διαβαζ- - διαβασ- αγαπώ - αγαπ- - αγαπησ-
γράφω - γραφ- - γραψ- τηλεφωνώ - τηλεφων- - τηλεφωνησ-

2. Place after the stem the personal endings of the present tense of the active voice of the verbs
of the 1st conjugation (-ω, -εις, -ει, -ουμε, -ετε, -ουν) and put the stress mark on the second-
to-last syllable. Notice that the first and the second person plural bear the stress mark on the
third-to-last syllable.
Group A, 1st conjugation Group B, 2nd conjugation, B1, B2
διαβάσ-ω, διαβάσ-εις, διαβάσ-ει, … αγαπήσ-ω, αγαπήσ-εις, αγαπήσ-ει, …
γράψ-ω, γράψ-εις, γράψ-ει, … τηλεφωνήσ-ω, τηλεφωνήσ-εις, τηλεφωνήσ-ει, …

3. Place the particle “θα” before the verb.


Group A, 1st conjugation Group B, 2nd conjugation, B1, B2
θα διαβάσω, θα διαβάσεις, … θα αγαπήσω, θα αγαπήσεις …
θα γράψω, θα γράψεις, … θα τηλεφωνήσω, θα τηλεφωνήσεις, …

In the table below one verb of each group is conjugated:


Group A, 1st conjugation Group B, 2nd conjugation, B1, B2
θα γράψω I shall write θα αγαπήσω I shall love
θα γράψεις you will write θα αγαπήσεις you will love
θα γράψει … θα αγαπήσει …

θα γράψουμε θα αγαπήσουμε

12.3.4.2 Formation of the simple future of the medio-passive voice


Verbs of the 1st and the 2nd conjugation
Characteristics
The simple future of the medio-passive voice of both groups can be formed by using: the particle “θα”,
the past stem of the medio-passive voice and the personal endings of the present tense of the active
voice of the B2 verbs.

Formation steps
The verbs πληρώνομαι (be paid), αγοράζομαι (be bought), αγαπιέμαι (be loved), κοιμάμαι (sleep),
διηγούμαι (narrate) are used as examples:
1. Find the past stem of the medio-passive voice of the verb.
Group A, 1st conjugation Group B, 2nd conjugation,
B1, B2, archaic conjugation
πληρώνομαι-πληρων-πληρωθ- αγαπιέμαι-αγαπ-αγαπηθ-
αγοράζομαι-αγοραζ-αγοραστ- κοιμάμαι-κοιμ-κοιμηθ-
διηγούμαι-διηγ-διηγηθ-

2. Place after the stem de personal endings of the present tense of the active voice of the B2
verbs (-ώ, -είς, -εί, -ούμε, -είτε, -ούν) and put the stress mark on the last syllable. Notice that
the first and the second person plural bear the stress mark on the second-to-last syllable.
Group A, 1st conjugation Group B, 2nd conjugation,
B1, B2, archaic conjugation
πληρωθ-ώ, πληρωθ-είς, … αγαπηθ-ώ, αγαπηθ-είς, …

3. Place before the verb the particle “θα”.


Group A, 1st conjugation Group B, 2nd conjugation,

θα πληρωθώ, θα πληρωθείς, … θα αγαπηθώ, θα αγαπηθείς, …
θα αγοραστώ, θα αγοραστείς, … θα κοιμηθώ, θα κοιμηθείς, …
θα διηγηθώ, θα διηγηθείς, …

In the table below one verb of each group is conjugated:
