Reported Speech - Questions


…/imperatives….statements…dialogues
1 To report questions the indirect speech is introduced by verbs such as ….asked,
inquired …etc.

Example: He said to me, ‘‘what are you doing here? ’’

He asked me what I was doing there.

2. To report yes/no questions, we use if or whether.

Example: He said to me, ‘‘Are you interested?’’

He asked me if I was interested.

He said to them, ‘‘Will you listen to such a person?’’

He asked them whether they would listen to such a person.

3. To report imperatives.

We use verbs such as requested, ordered, directed, suggested…etc

Example: He said to the boys, ‘‘don’t play on the lawn.’’.


He ordered the boys not to play on the lawn.

They said to us, ‘‘let’s all go to the beach.

They suggested that…..

‘‘Please listen to me, ’’ She said to them.

She requested them to …..

4. To report statements

Make the following changes

Tense change ( verb in the past tense – can be changed to past perfect)

Pronoun change

Words denoting time and place – eg today –that day, yesterday –the day before…etc

In Sentences conveying a habitual truth, a universal truth, a scientific fact-the verb tense
does not change,

Example:Teacher said to the students , ‘ ‘ The sun rises in the east’’.

Teacher told the students that the sun rises in the east.

Maha said to Sara, ‘ ‘ I will bring your book tomorrow’’

Maha told Sara that she would bring her book the next day.

She said , ‘ ‘ We ate ice cream at the mall yesterday.’’

She said that they had eaten ice cream at the mall the previous day/ the day before.

Ex 2 Read the following dialogue and complete the paragraph below using reported
speech

Judge: What are you charged with?

Prisoner: Sir, for doing my Diwali shopping early.

Judge: But that is not an offense. How early were you doing it?

Prisoner: Well sir, to avoid the rush I thought it would be better if I completed it before
the store opened.

The judge being in a great mood before the Diwali festival asked the
