Hydrological Modeling Using GIS

Project_4

Soil Map

Due Date: This lab is due by day October, 24th, 2022, at midnight

Mohammed G. Mohammed, Ph.D., University of Salahaddin-Erbil

Abstract

This project is for preparing Soil maps for Iraq in general and for Erbil City specifically. The
project demonstrates how to download the soil Maps from an international website the world
(FAO) and the shape files for any country (DIVA-GIS). The soil map has two parts, part 1 for
IRAQ country, and Part 2 for Kurdistan Region, Erbil City.

Goal: Use the GIS data such as a digital soil data map from the website to define your soil Map
for your site using ArcGIS tools. The soil map is necessary for other applications such as SWAT
to calculate for example the Rainfall-Runoff Model. The soil map and also the land use land
cover map (LULC) is so important things to simulate the hydrological processes.

Inputs:

- Soil Map Shapefile (DSMW)

- Iraq administrative shapefile ( IRQ_adm)

Outputs:

A soil map that has different texture types of soil for IRAQ. The soil map texture of Erbil City.

Steps:
- Copy and paste your Base_Project_Structure and rename it Project_4
- Copy and paste your RawData which you downloaded from the web to the Data Folder
inside the Project_4, and then unzip it by WinRAR using the Extract files option:

- If you don’t have the data, then you have to know how to download it and use it as the
following:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This part has been already prepared for you.

o Go to google and search for: FAO Map Catalog

o Search for: soil map> enter
o Click on: Digital Soil Map of the World> download
o Digital Soil Map of the world- ESR shapefile format:
- Copy and paste DSMW zipped data file and put it inside your Project_4>Data Folder
End section of the downloading
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Now open ArcMap:

Part 1

o Add data>
o Connect to folder Project_4>OK

Select the DSMW.shp which is available inside the Data Folder

Click OK>

- File >map properties>

- Click on Default Geodatabase> Project_4>add> Create Geodatabase
- A new Geodatabase will be created and you just need to name it as: Project_4.gdp
- Add this Project_4.gpd as below

- The Map Document Properties window will show up again,

o Pathnames option should be selected>Apply>OK

Check the Store relative pathways to data sources>apply>ok

o File >save as>go to the Project_4 folder>Other> File Name:

o Project_4 SoilMap>save
o now take a look at the attribute table> some fields are important such as SNUM,
FAOSOIL which refers to soil map number and type, and also the field
COUNTRY
o let us extract the IRAQ Map for the World Soil Map
▪ Table>select by Attribute>double click on “COUNTRY”>click on =>Get Unique
Values> write down IRAQ in the GO To field, the “IRAQ” name will be shown
up>double click on it>Apply
o To export this shape file of IRAQ
▪ Right click on DSMW shape file in the table of contents>Data>Export
data
▪ Find the right folder location to put this Shapefile> select the Data Folder
as a place to put this shape file
▪ Name the exported new shape file as IRAQ_Soil.shp
▪ Save
▪ OK
▪ Yes
▪ Now you can remove the DSMW shape file
▪ Click on IRAQ and Right-click> zoom to Layer of the IRAQ_Soil layer or Full
Extent

▪ To show the soil number and color

• Right-click on IRAQ shape file >Properties>Categories>Unique
Values>
o Value Field= SNUM
o Add All Values
o Apply
o OK
- Now, we need to download the administrational Cities in IRAQ:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This section has been already downloaded for you:
- Go to google search: Download data by country | DIVA-GIS

o Select the country: Iraq

o Subject: Administrative areas
o OK

o Download

End section of the downloading

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
o Copy and paste the IRQ_adm zipped file and put it in the Data Folder in
Project_4
o Extract files>OK
In ArcMap> add this IRQ_adm shapefile

- Make the added IRQ_adm0, 1, and 2 hollows (without color)

o The IRQ_adm0 = the outer border of IRAQ, make the line weight 2
o The IRQ_adm1= the governmental cities, we will be using this one for this class,
make the line weight 1.5
o The IRQ_adm2= the small cities’ borders within each government city, make the
line weight 1

- Layout View > select the IRQ_adm1 and IRAQ layers only
- Click on Full Extent
o Insert Title: Soil Map of IRAQ
o Insert >North Arrow
o Insert Legend and make sure (IRQ-adm1 and IRAQ) are available on the right
side of the window, and set the number of columns to 8
o Next> delete the word Legend from the Legend Title

o Next
o Next
o Next
o Finish
- Click on all other values in the table of content and delete it

- Export the layout map and save it as your first part 1 and save it as
Project_4_IRAQSoilMap in the Images folder of your Project_4
Part 2
Classifying Erbil Soil Map

- Click on Data View to go back to the main screen of ArcMap

- Turn off the IRAQ_Soil layer
- Click on a select feature to select Erbil boundary form IRQ_adm1

- Then, right-click on IRQ_adm1 shape file>Data>export data>

- Yes
- Now clear the Selected feature by clicking on the selected button

- Make the Erbil.shp as hollow (no color), and increase the Outline width to 2
-

To extract the soil texture for Erbil city,

o Geoprocessing>Clip > name the new shape file as (Erbil_Soil.shp)
Or by using the Analysis Tool
- Turn off the IRAQ layer
- To show the soil type SNUM
o Right-click>Erbil_Soil >Categories>unique values>add all values>apply>OK
Note: unselect all other values

Take a look at the attribute table

Show the color based on both SNUM, and FAOSOIL as follows:
- Export the map as Project_4_Erbil Soil Map into the images folder in your Project_4
folder
To be turned in:

Question 1: Please screen capture, or copy-paste your final during this exercise into a word
document and export it as a pdf, then submit it via the Website. For the following maps:

o IRAQ Soil Map.tif with a resolution of 300 dpi

o Erbil Soil Map.tif with a resolution of 300 dpi

Question 2: Write a short-bulleted description of at least 5 (five) different new tools/ things/or
issues during conducting this Project_4 encountered when finding, copying, importing, editing,
