Hydrological Modeling Using GIS

Project_7

Geological Map

Due Date: This lab is due by Nov. 14th, 2022, at midnight

Mohammed G. Mohammed, Ph.D., University of Salahaddin-Erbil

Abstract

This project is to prepare a geological map for any place in the world. This project_7 will be for
IRAQ country as a first (Part 1), and for Kurdistan Region in particular (Part 2). You will be
familiar with downloading the required data for any place in the world. Besides, you will be able to
use this project as a guide for any other hydrological process project, especially for the
investigation of new wells, dams, or any other strategic civil construction projects in the region.

Inputs:

- IRAQ shape file (IRQ_adm2), make sure to extract this zipped file.
- Geologic map (geo2bg.shp)
- USGS Guidance User for the Geologic units (USGS Guidance_Geological Maps).pdf
- Text file with geologic units (GLG_Names_USGS)

Outputs:

- The Geological map for IRAQ.

- The Geological map for Kurdistan Region.
Steps:
- Copy and paste your Base_Project_Structure and rename it Project_7
- Copy and paste your RawData which you downloaded from the web to the Data Folder inside
the Project_7, and then unzip it by WinRAR using this time the Extract Here option:

- If you don’t have the data, then you have to know how to download it and use it as the following:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This section has been already prepared for you, but I want to teach you how to download this
data!!!!!!!!!!!!
o Go to google and search for:
o https://certmapper.cr.usgs.gov/data/apps/world-maps/
o Select: Arabian Peninsula>GIS datasets>Bedrock geology of the Arabian Peninsula and
selected adjacent areas>Shapefile
This is the end of downloading the above Data. The Data section has been already downloaded and
prepared for you!!!!!!!!!!!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

o Copy and paste the zipped file: geo2bg.zip into your data folder and unzip it

- Open ArcMap
o ADD Data
▪ Connect to folder
Take a look at the attribute table of the geological shape file (geo2bg)
The GLG is the geological name of the Earth’s layer
Open the file properties:
Go to symbology>Categories> unique values>Vaile filed = GLG>remove the
check under symbols> add all values

Apply>OK
Notice that the data frame has a coordinate system of (GCS_WGC_ 1984)

To save the project_7

- File
- Save as (project_7_Geologic Map) inside the Other Folder inside the
Project_7 folder
• Add the shape file for the Iraq Administration (IRQ_adm2) folder
that has the bounders of the cities (IRQ_adm2.shp)
- Now open ArcMap:
- Add the IRQ_adm1 shape file to ArcMap

Check the coordinate system of the new iraq shape file

Let us correct the coordinate system of the datasets of layers:

Right-click on Layers>properties>projected coordinate system>UTM>WGS1984>Northern

Hemisphere>WGS 1984 UTM Zone N38>Apply>Yes>OK>Yes
Let we extract the geological map into the Iraq shape file:

Click on Arc Toolbox>Analyst Tool>Extract> Clip

Zoom to a layer of the new shape file

Remove the (geo2bg) shape file

- Make the IRQ_adm2 hollow

- Use the symbology to show the GLG codes

Open the attribute table of the GLG_IRQ

We need to add the geological names of the GLG codes which are available in the provided
pdf file (USGS Guidance_Geological Maps) in the Data folder
- Open the USGS Guidance_Geological Maps file
Go down until you see the codes of the geological map labels:
In order to define the names of the geological codes, a new text file,
GLG_Names_USGS.txt, has been created and filled with the names of the codes which
appear in GLG_IRQ.shp
The text file is ready and previously prepared for you to define the names of the codes
- Part 1:
IRAQ Geological map,
- Add the text file to the table of contents;
Right-click on the GLG_IRQ>Joints and Relates>Join
Click on Validate Join
Click on Close >OK
Open the attribute table of the GLG_IRQ

The names of the geological codes have been added

Go to symbology to see the names with the geological codes
Apply >OK
Go to layout View>Add title: Geological Map of IRAQ> Click on the change symbol>

Insert >North Arrow

Insert >Scale (kilometers)
Insert legends

Click on the frame line to add a grid

Next>next>finish>Apply>Ok
To increase the grid size, click on the frame line
Right Click on Properties
Apply >ok>apply>ok
Export the map with 300 dpi, and name the map as (Project_7_Geological Map IRAQ),
using the PNG format
Part 2
Open the attribute table of IRQ_adm2
Select by attributes>this formula should be entered in the current window of the attribute
table
"NAME_1" = 'Arbil' OR "NAME_1" = 'As-Sulaymaniyah' OR "NAME_1" = 'Dihok'
Apply>close
Right-click on the IRQ_adm2>Data>export data> name the exported selected as
(Kurdistan_adm2) >save

Click on clear selected features

Make the new shape file Hollow and increase the line weight to 1.5
Clip the GLG_IRQ to Kurdistan_adm2 and name the new shape file (GLG_Kurdistan)
Use the symbology to classify the new shape file with the codes and the names of the
geological of the Kurdistan region.

- Make the required layout and export the map as (Project_7_Geological Map_Kurdistan.png)
and make sure the map with 300 dpi and the format is png
- Save the new image in the images folder
To be turned in:
Question 1: Please screen capture, or copy-paste your final during this exercise into a word
document and export it as a pdf, then submit it via the Website. For the following maps:
o Part 1: Geological Map_IRAQ. Png, with 300 dpi resolution
o Part 2: Geological Map_Kurdistan.png, with 300 dpi resolution

Question 2: Write a short-bulleted description with a snapshot if possible, of at least 5

(five) different new tools encountered (during conducting this project_6) when finding,
copying, importing, editing, or submitting the final pdf result.
Hint: don’t google it and copy things that are not related to this project. The
description is for the new things that you are exposed to through this project.
