Tutorial_2_PRST (2)

The document contains a series of mathematical problems related to probability and statistics, including calculating probability mass functions, cumulative distribution functions, and expectations for various random variables. It also covers specific scenarios involving dice, coin tosses, and continuous random variables with defined probability density functions. Additionally, it explores the properties of distribution functions and their applications in calculating probabilities and expectations.

Tutorial 2

22nd August 2024

1. Given a two unbiased dice .We toss a two dice and let X denote a random variable that
denots the sum of two digits that appears in the dice. Write the probability mass function (PMF)
and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of X.

2. For what value of a will the given function be a probability distribution function,

f (x) = ae−|x| , −∞ < x < ∞

also find the CDF of X and also find E(X).

3. A fair coin is tossed five times. If X denotes the number of heads that appear then find
the PDF and CDF of X.

4.
Let (
0 if x ≤ 0,
F (x) = 3/2
1 − 23 e−x − 13 e−[x] if x > 0,
where [a] denotes the largest integer less than or equal to a.

(a) Show that F (x) is a distribution function (d.f.).

(b) Determine:

(i) P (2X − 4 > 8)

(ii) P (X = 1.5)
(iii) P ( |X| > 1)

5. Let X be a continuous random variable with the probability density function (pdf)
(
bx
√ √
1+x 2, e − 1 < x < e2 − 1
f (x) =
0, otherwise.

Find b, P (2 < X 2 < 2.5). Also find the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of X.

6. Distribution function F (x) of a continuous random variable X is given by

(
1 − e−x/θ for x ≥ 0, θ > 0
F (x) =
0 for x < 0,

1
find
P (X ≥ s + t | X ≥ t).
If Y = 1 − X 2 , then calculate P (Y ≥ 43 ).

7. Given a distribution function f (x)

(
1 −x
4 xe
2, x>0
f (x) =
0, otherwise.

find the mean , median and mode of this distribution.

8. The probability density function of the random variable X is given by,

( 2
2xe−x , x > 0
f (x) =
0, otherwise.

Find the PDF and CDF of X 2 .

9. Three concentric circles of radii √13 , 1 and 3 feet are drawn on a target board. If a shot
falls within the innermost circle, 3 points are scored; if it falls within the next two rings the
score is respectively 2 and 1; and the score is 0 if the shot is outside the outermost circle. If the
probability density of the distance of the hit from the centre of the target is π2 1+r1
2 . find the

probability distribution of the score.

10. Given X follows a generalized pareto distribution with distribution function

f (x) = a(1 + x)−(a+1) , x > 0

now Y = log(1 + X) then find the PDF and CDF of Y . Also find
• E(Y)
• E(Y 2 + 1)

• P (0 < Y < 10)
