WHY DO WE HAVE THE SEASONS?

A WORD WITH ELISHA JUNG
How does Climate Change
affect the lives of Earth’s
residents?
ANIMALS
Unfortunately, climate change has a
massive impact on our planet’s
animals. Climate change causes very
fast and large changes to important
habitats that animals have adapted
to over time. For example, the
shrinking of arctic ice sheets
destroys habitats for many animals
like polar bears and walruses.
Another organism impacted by
climate change is coral reefs. The
rising sea temperatures create
thermal stress on the algae that
feeds the coral which in turn causes
the reefs to starve. This process is
called coral bleaching.

HUMANS
Climate change also has a massive
influence on humans as well. Forest
fires created by the unnaturally
warmer conditions can worsen the
air quality in our cities, harming
people with or without preexisting
respiratory conditions. Changed
climates and more extreme weather
patterns can cause many problems
for farmers or ranchers who provide
vital food and resources to the rest
of the population. This would create
shortages of food all around the
globe. These shortages can lead to
crashes in entire industries which
affects a country’s economy. The
rising sea levels also pose a massive
threat to all coastal cities and
islands.

3
What is the biosphere and how has
climate change impacted it?
These are the three
components of the Atmosphere They contribute to
housing life on Earth
biosphere The atmosphere is a mixture of gasses surrounding
Earth meant to regulate temperatures and protect
the planet from the vacuum of space. The
atmosphere consists of 78% Nitrogen, 20% Oxygen
and 1% Argon. The other 1% consists of the Earth’s
greenhouse gasses which help heat up the planet.

Hydrosphere Lithosphere
The hydrosphere is all water on Earth, including The section where we all live is the lithosphere.
glaciers and ice caps. The hydrosphere is The lithosphere is all landmass on Earth,
crucial in the transportation in thermal energy excluding the mantle and core, and it hosts the
around the world through oceanic currents. The most unique and diverse ecosystems. The
hydrosphere also helps regulate temperatures lithosphere houses all terrestrial organisms and
and provides around 60% of the Earth’s is used to regulate CO2 levels and provide
oxygen through microplankton nutrients for plant life.

What has climate change actually done to the biosphere?

The increase in global temperatures due to climate change has had a massive influence on the health and
wellness of the biosphere. The most prominent issue has been the rising sea levels. Ever since 1880 global
sea levels have risen by 8-9 inches and this unprecedented rise has had drastic consequences. Coastal
cities such as Vancouver, New York and Miami are at risk of being overtaken by the ocean possibly
displacing millions of people and causing billions in damages. The warmer climate has also done damage
to the atmosphere. Because of the unnaturally warm temperatures the atmosphere is collecting,
retaining and unleashing more and more water. This has caused natural events such as hurricanes,
rainstorms and droughts to become much more severe and frequent. These effects have caused extreme
damage to ecosystems in both the hydrosphere and lithosphere, the health and safety of the human
population and the overall health of the planet. This is all due to our contribution to the greenhouse
effect and if we don’t stop contributing these issues will continue to worsen until our planet becomes
almost uninhabitable.

WHY DO WE HAVE
THE SEASONS?

Seasons occur due to the Earth's 23.5

degree axial tilt, which affects how much
solar energy reaches different parts of the
Earth throughout the year. In summer,
when the hemisphere is tilted towards the
sun, sunlight strikes the Earth more directly
at a higher angle, concentrating energy in a
smaller area. This results in warmer
temperatures and longer days providing
more hours of daylight for solar heating.
While in winter it is the complete opposite,
the hemisphere is tilted away from the sun
which causes sunlight to spread over a
larger area at a lower angle. The days
become shorter which mean less sunlight,
contributing to less solar heating. These
variations in sunlight and day length are
what create the seasonal changes.
