Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: enumerate the basics of mass transfer.

CO2 :: determining the theories of mass transfer.

CO3 :: explore various mass transfer equipment used in different processes.

CO4 :: determine various mass transfer processes for VLE.

Unit I
Introduction to mass transfer : general principles of mass transfer, classification of mass transfer
operations, choice of separation method, methods of conducting mass transfer operations, design
principles, diffusion mass transfer, molecular diffusion in gases and liquids, diffusivities of gases and
liquids, types of diffusion, Fick’s and Maxwell law of diffusion, diffusion in solids, unsteady state mass
transfer, equimolal counter diffusion of two components, steady state diffusion of one component in
non- diffusion second component
Unit II
Interphase mass transfer and coefficients : mass transfer coefficients in laminar flow and
turbulent flow, theories of mass transfer, mass- heat and momentum transfer analogies, inter-phase
mass transfer, equilibrium in mass transfer, the two resistance theory, continuous co-current,
countercurrent and crosscurrent processes, cascades
Unit III
Gas absorption : mechanism of gas absorption and equilibrium in gas absorption, application of
mass transfer theories to absorption, values of transfer coefficient, absorption in packed tower and
spray tower, Kremsers equation, calculation of HETP, HTU -NTU calculations of height of packed and
spray tower, absorption in tray towers, stripping factors and tray efficiencies
Unit IV
Humidification and dehumidification : principles and vapour-liquid equilibria, enthalpy of pure
substances and basic definition of all humidification terms, wet bulb temperature relation and
psychrometric chart, Lewis relation and methods of humidification - dehumidification, cooling towers;
spray chambers; spray ponds, cooling tower design, calculation of height of cooling tower
Unit V
Equipment for gas liquid operation : types of columns and trays, types of packing, gas dispersal
equipment – bubble columns, mechanically agitated vessels, liquid dispersal equipment – venturi
scrubbers, wetted wall columns and packed columns
Unit VI
Drying : principles and equilibrium in drying, type of moisture binding, mechanism of batch drying,
continuous drying and time required for drying, mechanism of moisture movement in solid, design
principles of tray dryer, rotary dryer; drum dryer; spray dryer, fluidized bed, pneumatic dryer and
vacuum dryer
