Engineering and Management
Engineering and Management
“It is the act of getting things done through others and having them do it
willingly”. It is a difficult art, not a science, like the computer business or
manufacturing.
It is the process of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling the work of
the organization and of using the available organizational resources to meet
its stated goals and objectives.
MANAGEMENT is not easy. There are many differences between Engineering
and Management. The 2 factors that a new Engineering Manager are most
likely to encounter are:
1. People Management – extends to those who report directly to him, his
superiors, peers, customers and suppliers
2. The need to interface with the many different functions within the
organization: finance marketing, HR, etc.
AN OVERVIEW OF MANAGEMENT
What management is all about is to analyse the present and anticipate the
relevant environment in its larger context, reflect this in an up-to-date
strategy and a supporting concept of how to compete (i.e. win the many
battles in various battlefronts) using an organization (i.e. structure) suitable
for the chosen strategy and battle plan. See Fig. 1.
The arrows indicate that the environment, strategy and structure influence
each other.
All of these, however, must be done using the best available theories about
human nature an the physical universe as developed by researchers and
practitioners over the years and as embodied in available technology.
These theories are about Know-How (effective ways f doing things or doing
things right) and Know-Why (a sense of purpose, a guiding philosophy of doing
the right things.)
