What is Engineering Management?

 Engineering management is the application of the practice

of management to the practice of engineering. Engineering management is a
career that brings together the technological problem-solving ability
of engineering and the organizational, administrative, and planning abilities
of management in order to oversee the operational performance of complex
engineering driven enterprises.
What is Engineering?

Several Definitions of Engineering:

 Engineering is the branch of science and technology concerned with the
design, builSding, and use of engines, machines, and structures.
 Engineering is a scientific field and job that involves taking our scientific
understanding of the natural world and using it to invent, design, and build
things to solve problems and achieve practical goals. This can include the
development of roads, bridges, cars, planes, machines, tools, processes, and
computers.
 Engineering is the use of scientific principles to design and build machines,
structures, and other items, including bridges, tunnels, roads, vehicles, and
buildings. ... The term engineering is derived from the Latin
ingenium, meaning "cleverness" and ingeniare, meaning "to contrive, devise".
 -the art or science of making practical application of the knowledge of pure
sciences, as physics or chemistry, as in the construction of engines, bridges,
buildings, mines, ships, and chemical plants.
 - the art or process of designing and programming computer systems:
computer engineering;software engineering.
The definition that I like best is this:

 ENGINEERING – is the profession in which knowledge of the mathematical and

natural sciences, gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with
judgment, to develop ways to utilize economically the materials and forces of
nature for the benefit of mankind.
 Engineering has always been concerned with the economical use of limited
resources for the benefit of people.
 The Engineering profession can be justifiably proud of its achievement!
 In the field of transportation
 From horse-drawn carriage to jetplanes, etc.
 In the field of communication
 Hand signals to cell phones
 Letters to Fb messenger, Viber
 In the field of Food
 Sinangag kape to instant coffee, etc.
 Etc.
DISCUSSION:
Engineering skills alone are not sufficient to
guarantee success. Why?
 Industry requires persons who are not only knowledgeable engineers but also
competent managers to ensure that products are developed and brought to
the market place to meet the needs of the customers.
 It has been said that successful companies are run by accountants. Do you
agree? Support your answer.
 In the modern technological era, where information span the globe in a
fraction of a second, engineering companies need to be run by MANAGERS
who understand the technology they are controlling.
What is Management?
 Management is a process of planning, decision making, organizing, leading,
motivation and controlling the human resources, financial, physical, and
information resources of an organization to reach its goals efficiently and
effectively.
 The process of setting and achieving goals through the execution
of five basic management functions: planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and
controlling; that utilize human, financial, and material resources. ...
 Definition of Management: Management functions include: Planning, organizing,
staffing, leading or directing, and controlling an organization (a group of one or
more people or entities) or effort for the purpose of accomplishing a goal.
 According to this definition, management is a process – a systematic way of doing
things. The four management activities included in this process are- planning,
organizing, actuating and controlling. Planning means that managers think of their
actions in advance.
All of the definitions above are correct. But I
find the best definition of management is this:

 “It is the act of getting things done through others and having them do it
willingly”. It is a difficult art, not a science, like the computer business or
manufacturing.
 It is the process of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling the work of
the organization and of using the available organizational resources to meet
its stated goals and objectives.
 MANAGEMENT is not easy. There are many differences between Engineering
and Management. The 2 factors that a new Engineering Manager are most
likely to encounter are:
 1. People Management – extends to those who report directly to him, his
superiors, peers, customers and suppliers
 2. The need to interface with the many different functions within the
organization: finance marketing, HR, etc.
AN OVERVIEW OF MANAGEMENT

ENVIRONMENT STRATEGY STRUCTURE

Figure 1: Basic Framework

 What management is all about is to analyse the present and anticipate the
relevant environment in its larger context, reflect this in an up-to-date
strategy and a supporting concept of how to compete (i.e. win the many
battles in various battlefronts) using an organization (i.e. structure) suitable
for the chosen strategy and battle plan. See Fig. 1.
 The arrows indicate that the environment, strategy and structure influence
each other.
 All of these, however, must be done using the best available theories about
human nature an the physical universe as developed by researchers and
practitioners over the years and as embodied in available technology.
 These theories are about Know-How (effective ways f doing things or doing
things right) and Know-Why (a sense of purpose, a guiding philosophy of doing
the right things.)
