The Real Santa

Claus
The original Santa Claus was a bishop from the 4th

century called Saint Nicholas. He lived in Myra, in

Turkey. He was a very rich man, but he gave most of

his money to the poor. A famous story is when he

dropped gold down a chimney to help a poor man

with his daughter’s wedding.

How Saint Nicholas became Santa


Claus Santa

Claus has many names around the world. In the USA,

he is Santa Claus, which comes from the Dutch

word “Sinterklass”. In Australia he is called Kris

Kringle, after the word “Christkind”, which means

“Jesus-child”. Christ = Jesus Christ; Kind = the

German word for “child” (= Kindergarten). In the UK

he was called Father Christmas, or Old Man

Christmas, and he wore many colours, including

red, green and blue.

Harper’s Weekly in the 1800s. Over time, he became fatter and

redder. He was used in adverts for Coca-Cola
