Part two #10 After so much harassment from the press outside Fez finally made her way inside the court room which was overly crowded. She scanned the room and spotte Dineo sat on the first row with Doctor Pearson next to her. She waved at them and they waved back smiling as she made her way to the front taking a seat praying that Madzaleni will show up and just as she had asked She kept her eyes buried on the ground avoiding any kind of eye contact with anyone as cameras rolled to get the perfect angle of her making the grand entran Once seated she buried her face right between her thighs trying to hide from people. She felt like the earth could just open up and swallow her. This was a big “Shame man. Are you guys sure she is ready for this?” Dr Pearson asked Dineo “I don’t know.” Dineo answered with fear and pity covered on her face Hannes Steenberg made his grand entrance surrounded by many police officials. The trial hadn’t started yet but victory was written all over him and he enjoyed “Miss Jiyose.” He greeted while extending his hand to Fez for a handshake She reluctantly shook his hand not knowing how to address him. He was a big shot and she never thought she could ever share a court room with him. Just loo “I’ve never heard about you before I mean I even tried searching you but all I could find was that you started your firm which there is nothing to write home abo She looked at him trying to find a suitable answer but nothing came up. “Good luck Miss Jiyose.” He said while letting go of her hand and moving to his seat laughing deep inside. “Jy is baie swak.” He whispered the words meant for He smelt power, he smelt danger and mostly he smelt victory. Fez and everybody in the court room felt that way She looked at Madzaleni sitting down shaking like a leaf on a cold winter day. Her life was in her hands. “God I’m nothing but just a vessel. I’m available to be used by you to save your child. Use me as you wish.” She prayed the silent prayer which was interrupted b Lucy Kgabo was the magistrate with a massive experience and well known for dishing out harsh sentences. Hannes Steenberg took a stand after the magistrate took a seat calling the case Lucy Kgabo looked at the charge sheet biting her pen then tuned to face Hannes Steenberg “Would the prosecution like to make the opening statement?” She said swinging her chair with the top of the pen back inside her mouth Steenberg stood up confidently fixing his black tie trying to hide the smile on his face. “Yes your worship and ooh a very good morning. The accused here Miss Matsaline Ndlozi or is it Matilda? Maria? Or what are those names again? it’s so confus “Objection your worship.” Fez shouted up on her feet “Mr Steenberg your opening statement please sir.” Lucy said trying to suppress a laugh. It was so evident she was enjoying this and she just reprimanded him c “Oh well I’ll just refrain from using her names and stick to the accused. Ladies and gentlemen as we all know the accused is on trial for murdering five innocent Five innocent men. Gosh he just had to make that stand out. That made Fez feel like punching his arrogant face. “Defense?” Lucy said swinging her chair looking at Fez with that let’s see what you can do look “Thank you your worship.” She took a deep breath before she could continue. “In the course of this trial I will prove to the court beyond reasonable doubt that M “Is the state ready to proceed?” Lucy asked looking at Steenberg “Oh yes as the court pleases your worship. Your worship the state would like to call in its first witness officer Jacky Mudau from forensic.” Fez put her hands on her head and breathed in and out as the officer took an oath and the state got ready to proceed. “Office Mudau. Thank you so much for taking your time to make it here today sir. Can you kindly tell the court where you are working and what you do?” “I’m working at Saps here in Polokwane and I’m in charge of the fingerprint section.” Mudau “How long have you had that job?” “Long time sir.” “More than ten years perhaps?” “Way more than that. I have over 15 years’ experience.” “Interesting. So you can confidently call yourself an expect?” “Yes.” “How do you identify fingerprint officer Mudau?” Mudau explained all the different patterns they use to identify fingerprints making sure he goes in detail of each. “Interesting. So is it possible to match my fingerprint with somebody else fingerprint? I mean in your 15 years of working experience has that ever happened?” “Never sir. That’s highly impossible. Fingerprints are formed from birth and they can never be identical.” Steenberg frowned as if like he was confused. “Are you sure? Even in the case of twins?” “Yes sir. Even twins have different kinds of fingerprints.” “Ok now this is confusing. Tell me Mr Mudau were you the one who examined the fingerprints of Matsaline Maria Matilda and…” “Objection your worship.” Fez said while on her feet “Overruled. Continue Mr Steenberg.” Fez sat on the chair defeated. She could see the angle he was going with this. Smart very smart “I’ll repeat the question again. Did you examine the fingerprints at all the five murder scenes?” “Yes.” “And?” “They were all identical.” “You want to tell the court here that all fingerprints found at the murder scenes matched those one’s of Miss Ndlozi here?” “Yes sir.” “And you can safely tell the court that no error was made here?” “Hundred percent. No error was made at all.” “Thank you Mr Mudau.” He turned to Lucy with a smile “No further questions your worship.” “Cross examination defense?” Lucy Fez took a deep breath as she stood up getting ready ….
