Circumference of a Circle

0
MELC

 Measures time using a 12- hour and a 24- hour clock.

 Calculates time in the different world time zones in relation to the Philippines.
 Solves problems involving time.

A. Introduction and Discussion

Measurements play an important role when travelling. You need to decide what clothes to
bring because some places are hot while others are cold. Take note also that times are different from
all around the globe. The world will be chaotic if there is no concrete concept of time.

B. Illustrative Examples

Study the problem

Angel is a transferee student in Masagana Elementary School. She is advised that her first
class is 8:00 a.m. She needs 25 minutes to pray before going out of bed, 15 minutes to do her daily
devotional, 10 minutes to eat her breakfast, 20 minutes to takes a bath, 1 minutes to get and 40
minutes to travel to school. If she wants to be in school by 7:00 a.m., how much time does Angel
need to get ready for school?

Study the table below:

Morning Routine Time Needed
Prayer Time 25 minutes
Devotion 15 minutes
Breakfast 10 minutes
Bath 20 minutes
Dressing up 10 minutes
Travel Time 40 minutes
Total 120 minutes

Angel needs 120 minutes to get ready for school.

Angel should wake up 120 minutes before 7:00 a.m., so she will not be late for school.

1
C. Explain:
What time should Angel wake up in the morning for her not to be late for school?
At what is 120 minutes before 7:00 a.m.?
First we should know that time can be expressed in different units.
Let us refer to the table below:

Unit of measurement (Time) Equivalent

1 millennium 10 centuries
1 century 10 decades
1 decade 10 years
1 year 12 months
1 month 4 weeks
1 week 7 days
1 day 24 hours
1 hour 60 minutes
1 minute 60 seconds

For us to know what time is 12 minutes before 7:00 a.m., we must know how many hours are
there in 120 minutes.

Using the table above and what you have learned in proportion:

1 hour: 60 minutes = n hours: 12 minutes

By the cross product rule:
60 x n = 120 x 1
1_ = n_ 60n = 120
60 120 60n = 120
60 60
n=2 hours
Therefore, Angel needs to wake up 2 hours before 7:00 am
so that she will not be late for school.

To know what time this is, we just subtract 2 hours from

7:00 am.
She should wake up at 5:00 a.m. so that she will not be late for school.

2
Example 1
Time Solution
1 noon 12:00 nn
2 midnight 12:00 m.n.
“after” means you have to add to the current time
3:00 p.m.
2 hours and 20 minutes
3 hour minutes
after 3:00 p.m.
3 + 2 hours = 5 00 + 20 minutes = 20
Therefore, 5:20 p.m.
“before” means you have to subtract from the current time
7:30 a.m.
4 hours and 9 minutes hour minutes
4
before 7:30 a.m. 7 - 4 hours = 3 30 - 9 minutes = 21
Therefore,4:21 a.m.
“past” means after, so you have to add to the current time.
“half” means half an hour, so 30 minutes.
Half past 4 in the 4:00 p.m.
5
afternoon hour minutes
00 + 30 = 30
Therefore,4:30 p.m.
“to” means before, so you have to subtract from the current time
“midnight” means 12:00 mn
We cannot subtract 3 form zero, so we borrow from 12 and 12
becomes 11, 00 becomes 60 because we borrowed 1 hour from 12 and
add it to 0 minutes and 1 hour is equal to 60 minutes.
6 3 minutes to midnight
12:00 p.m.
hour minutes
12 – 1 hour = 11 60 - 3 minutes = 57
Therefore, 11:57 p.m.
(p.m. because before midnight is p.m.)
“quarter” means ¼ an hour, 60 minutes divided by 4 is 15 minutes.
If we add 15 to 50, the sum will be greater than 60, we must convert
that 60 to 1 hour and add it to 6, and the difference will just be
minutes to be reflected in the answer.
7 Quarter after 6:50 p.m.
6:50 p.m.
hour minutes
6 + 1 hour = 7 50+ 15 = 65 – 60 = 5
Therefore, 11:57 p.m.

The 12 – hour and 24 hour Clock

12- hour Clock 24- hour Clock

12:00 midnight 00:00 H
12:01 a.m. – 11:59 a.m. 00:01- 11:59 H
12:00 n.n. – 11:59 p.m. 12:00 – 23-59 H

3
a.m. and p.m. are placed at the end to denote whether the time is in the morning or afternoon.
They are abbreviations when the 12- hour clock is used.
ante meridiem (a.m.) means this time is after 12 midnight and before 12 noon, so 12:01
a.m. to 11:59 p.m.
post meridiem (p.m.) means this time is after 12 noon and before 12 midnight, so 12:01
p.m. to 11:59 p.m.
The 24-hour clock, oftentimes called as Military Clock since soldiers are the ones who mostly use
it, does not require a.m. and p.m. to be written after the time as it starts at 00:00, which is
12 midnight, then back to 00:00 after 23:59 (11:59 p.m.). Instead, H or Hours is placed at
the end to indicate the use of the 24- hour clock format

Example 2

Application and Problem Solving
A bus leaves Manila at 22:10 H on Thursday and arrives in Baguio 6 ½ hours later. At what time and
day did the bus arrive in Baguio? Express the answer both 12 and 24- hour clock format
Understand
a. What is asked in the problem?
 At what time and day did the bus arrive in Baguio?
 Express the answer both 12 and 24- hour clock format.
b. What are the given facts?
 A bus leaves Manila at 22:10 H on Thursday and arrives in Baguio 6 ½ hours later
Plan
Add 6 ½ to 22:10 H, the express the answers both in 12 and 24- hours clock formats.
Solve
22:00 H is the same as 10:00 p.m.
6 ½ hours is the same as 6 hours and 30 minutes.
hours:22+ 6 = 28 – 24 = 4 hours: 10 + 6 = 16- 12 = 4
There cannot be 28 hours, so we subtract 24 from There cannot be 16 hours in a 12- hour clock so, we
28, which means a day has passed, and it’s already subtract 12 from 16 which means p.m. has passed
Friday. already; it is already a.m. of the following day, that is
minutes: 10 + 30 = 40 Friday.
Therefore, the bus arrived in Baguio at 04:40 H, minutes: 10 + 30 = 40
Friday So, the bus arrived in Baguio at 04:40 a.m. Friday

 Visualizes Circumference of a Circle.
 Measures Circumference of a Circle using appropriate tools.
 Finds the Circumference of a Circle.

A. Introduction and Discussion

Circumference is the distance around a circle

B. Illustrative Examples

Study the problem

Tom usually spends his free time in his huge garden. He wanted the landscape to be unique
so even it is hard, he made a circular plot at the middle. He wanted to build a fence around the plot
for the safety of the newly planted seeds on it. How much fencing materials does Tom need if the
diameter of the circle plot is 3 meters

To answer the problem use this formula:

C=2 r
or
C= d
Where r is the radius and d is the diameter

Since d = 3 meters
C= d
C= (3m)
C=3 m
Jenny needs 3 m of materials to work on the fence of the circular plot of her huge garden.
Approximately how long is 3 m? What is the value of ?

C. Explain:

Pi ( ) reads as “pie” is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. It is an

irrational number (a decimal that is non-repeating and non-terminating) and cannot be expressed as
a fraction nor decimal. This is why the Greek letter is used to denote its value. However, the
rational numbers 3.14 and 22/7 are used as approximations for .
Since we know the measure of the diameter is twice the radius (d = 2r), C = d is the same
as C = 2r or C = 2 r because multiplication is commutative.
