Douglas Craggs was called to the degree of MIMC on 3 June
1930 and the following year he presented one of his ventriloquial

8,000, amplifiers being used successfully. For good measure he
played a return date at the Central Hall in Southampton that
same evening. And it was the Associated Wizards of the South of
Southampton who suggested that Craggs should represent The
Circle at their Annual Dinner in March 1931, to which the
Council readily agreed. It is in a report of this function that we
capture the first glimpse of Craggs’s magic for he augmented the
mandatory ventriloquial sketch with “a series of magical
problems,” which included the cut and restored rope,

When we think of comedy and magic, it is not too long
before the legend that was Carl Ballantine (1917-2009) comes
to mind. Recently I obtained a lobby card from the McHale’s
Navy film (a spin-off from the popular TV series), in which he
appeared. Although I was too late to get the photo signed by
Ballantine, I decided to send it to Ernest Borgnine, the star of
the film, whose work I enjoyed in The Poseidon Adventure.
Again, a nice souvenir of a respected actor.
A while ago I bought a promotional playbill for the
Hollywood Palace show (1964-1970). This was a successful,
long-running American television extravaganza, show-casing
just about every star at that time, including many magicians
and variety performers. The first one I bought was signed by
Joan Crawford and, further down the bill, Ralph Adams, noted
for his Dancing Hanks routine. So when another similar playbill,
from another show, came up for sale, featuring magic, I was
particularly keen. Although not signed, it starred Jane Powell,
and the German magician Gerd Maron. My research on Powell
indicated she was still alive and, when approached, very
accommodating with autographs. I sent the playbill, a vintage
postcard, and both were duly returned, signed to me.

Richard next officially launched his new PET effect (Plastic

Richard demonstrated this within a John van der Put routine. A

UNMYSTERIOUS ISLAND
Big Train was a deliciously surreal BBC sketch show that last
aired in 2002. You can find many clips from the show on
YouTube, but be careful: they are highly addictive. Watch one
clip and you’re likely to spend hours watching all the others.
A particularly unkind but funny sketch features one of the
cast portraying famed Beatles producer Sir George Martin. The
sketch is based on the notion that Sir George can’t talk about
anything except working with the Fab Four and that he never
stops doing so – even when asked about something else
entirely.
I mention this because I’ve developed a similar problem and I
feel it’s only fair to warn you all. The problem has arisen
because I recently visited Easter Island. It was such an amazing
experience that I expect to be talking about it non-stop for
quite some time, and to the exclusion of all else. Only the other
day my Significant Other asked me if I’d like a cup of tea and I
gave her a brief lecture on the three volcanic eruptions that
formed Easter Island and the role the volcanic craters came to
play in the Island’s culture. She has taken to throwing things at
me in return. Sometimes a cushion, sometimes a well-aimed
tranquilliser dart.
