PRECIS WRITING

• What is a precis?
The word, “precis” means summary. It is the summary of a given
passage. In a precis, only the essential points of the original
passage are retained and all other details are left out. When we
write a precis of a passage we should not add anything from
outside, nor should we delete anything essential from the
original passage. The original author’s tone and meaning should
be retained in the precis.

• The features of a good precis:

1. Clarity, brevity and precision
2. The writer of a precis does not lift words or sentences from
the given passage, but uses his own words to convey the
original author’s opinion.
3. The points are arranged in a logical order and the precis is
well-knit.
4. Indirect speech or reported speech is used.
5. No extraneous matters are added.
6. A suitable title is given to the precis.

• The steps to be followed while writing a precis:

1. Read the given passage at least twice thoroughly and
identify the main ideas of the passage.
2. Note down only the essential points of the passage.
3. Arrange the important points in a logical order.
4. Ensure that grammatical errors are not made in the
precis.
5. Suggest an appropriate title to the precis.
6. Write a couple of drafts before you write the final
version of your precis.
7. Count the number of words (only content words) in the
precis and write the number in the brackets at the end.
