Use of Taskbook

The SimuFlite taskbook is both a tool for the cockpit and a training aid
for the simulator.
Three sections comprise this book: basic, intermediate, and advanced.
These terms refer to the general skill level required to complete the
associated tasks successfully.
The taskbook may be accessed in three ways: via table of contents, by
skill level, and by numbered reference from the back.
• The table of contents lists all subjects included in this taskbook.
• If a procedure is known to be within a particular group, place
thumb on the tab for that group and open.
• For rapid access, flip the taskbook over. Locate the desired proce-
dure and its reference number. Next, locate the numbered tab;
place thumb on the associated tab and open. The procedure is on
one of the pages now visible.

NOTICE: This Challenger/Hawker FMS Taskbook is to be used for

aircraft familiarization and training purposes only. It is not to be used
as, nor considered a substitute for, the manufacturer’s Pilot or
Maintenance Manuals.

Lateral Navigation:
To engage Lateral Navigation, the following conditions must be
met:
■ FMS must be the selected NAV source.

■ The active leg must be defined.

General Lateral NAV rules

■ One leg minimum must be defined.

■ Available for all phases of flight
■ Bank angles do not exceed 25° except in holding, procedure
turns, orbit patterns and arc segments. The exceptions are
limited to 30° bank angle.
■ Enroute roll rate is 3° per second
■ Approach roll rate is 5.5° per second.
■ The actual bank angle used is the greater of the pilot entered
value or angle computed by the FMS to remain within
protected airspace.
■ A lateral track alert is given 30 seconds prior to starting a
turn.

The four line select keys on either side of the CDU screen are
identified as 1L through 4L and 1R through 4R (see above).

■ Multiple pages are noted in the upper right corner of the

screen (e.g. 1/3).
■ The PREV and NEXT buttons move the display between pages.
■ The next logical step is generally at 4R. If displayed in white
inverse, it is a strong suggestion. Following the next logical
step suggestion ensures all required items are accomplished.
■ All tasks may be accessed through the three menu keys: PERF,
NAV, or DIR.
■ The CLR key edits the scratchpad at the bottom of the screen.
Input is typed on the scratchpad prior to pressing the line
select key to place in the appropriate location. Scratchpad
entries begin with an asterisk (*) or pound sign (#) and are
deleted by pressing the clear key (CLR) once.
■ Pressing the DEL key inserts *DELETE* on the scratchpad.
Subsequent pressing of a Line Select Key will delete an entry
or restore a default value to that location.
■ Inverse flags denote special NAV functions.

CONDITIONS:
■ FMS powered

NOTE: The active flight plan can be stored in memory for future
use at any point while aircraft is on the ground (prompt for
saving is removed when aircraft airborne). The saved active
flight plan must follow the same rules as stored flight plans.

time calculations are also based on pilot entered speeds
and winds.
■ If CURRENT GS/FF used, only 4 pages need to be
completed. Calculations are based on the current fuel flow
on the FUEL MGT page. Pilot entered fuel flows override
sensed fuel readings. Time calculations are based on
current groundspeed in flight and default groundspeed
while on the ground.
■ PILOT SPD/FF uses pilot entered speed schedules and
winds to perform time calculations. Fuel calculations are
based on entered cruise values. It adjusts for higher
values burned in a climb.
■ All entries (wind and temperature excepted) are mandatory
to use VNAV.

NOTE: To optimize aircraft performance, use step climbs for

long range flights. If a step increment is selected, the
FMS computes the bottom of step climb point where the
aircraft is light enough to climb by the selected step
increment to a new cruise altitude.
Full Performance must be available and the Initial Cruise
Altitude must be the first anticipated level and NOT the

APPROACH

CONDITIONS:
■ FMS flight plan active and sequenced correctly

■ Approach procedure added to active flight plan (preceding

section)

CAUTION: Before flying a non-precision approach that includes

the transition, it is imperative to review published approach
procedure and verify FMS waypoints and altitude restrictions.

NOTE: Only non-precision, non-localizer type approaches may

be flown by the FMS. LOC and LOC-BC approaches may
NOT be flown FMS (they may be displayed for situational
awareness). The associated missed approach may be
flown using the FMS regardless of the type of approach
flown.

DSPLY DR DGRAD MSG OFF SET APRCH

1. The APRCH annunciator must illuminate 2 NM prior to final

approach fix and remain illuminated throughout procedure.
This indicates sensor configuration is correct and everything
is within limits for selected procedure. Annunciator does not
illuminate during precision or localizer type approaches.

DSPLY DR DGRAD MSG OFF SET APPRCH

2. If the DGRAD annunciator illuminates, a problem exists with

sensor configuration or limits. FMS data should not be used
to continue approach. The crew must either:
■ Fly the missed approach procedure, or

■ Continue the approach with raw data.

Challenger/Hawker FMS Taskbook

34 Developed for Training Sep 01
3. If a procedure turn or other mandated course reversal is
required, it can only be activated from the database by
selecting a transition that would require it to be flown. There
is no requirement to fly the transition, but it must be activated
to set up the course reversal.
4. If VNAV is used for vertical descent guidance on the
approach, check the approach plate waypoints against the
FMS waypoints. The altitude selector should be set to the
MDA.
5. The navigation database does not include step-down
waypoints between FAF and MAP if the VNAV path satisfies
the step-down restrictions.

NOTE: Using VNAV path control may not always be the best
option for an approach. Vertical Speed, Flight Level
Change, or Pitch may be better options than VPATH.

6. The following items SHOULD NOT be performed to a

selected approach procedure:
■ Add waypoints into the middle of the procedure.

■ Relocate procedure waypoints in flight plan.

■ Remove waypoints from an approach procedure (other

than DELeting the FROM waypoint or performing a
DIRect to) or activating another approach or flight plan
and continuing to fly the procedure.
■ Change an altitude or angle constraint associated with
an approach waypoint.
■ Add holding patterns, orbits, or radial intercepts to an
approach waypoint.
■ Change destination and then continue to fly approach to
original destination.

SIMUFLITE TIP: While transferring approach procedures is not

prohibited by limitations as with holding patterns,
use care transferring and monitor closely
approaches utilizing procedure turns and arc
transitions between FMSs while approaching the
Initial fix or established on approach. Ensure that
the required procedure transferred completely and
correctly.

MISSED APPROACH
CONDITIONS:
■ Approach Procedure selected from database.

1. The FMS contains the published missed approach procedure

for selected approach. The procedure follows the last page
of the ACTIVE FLT PLAN once the approach has been selected.
2. Review missed approach prior to commencing the
approach procedure.
9
thru NOTE: The Missed Approach procedure is not displayed on EFIS
14
until activated, but it may be reviewed at any time by
pressing NEXT and PREV keys once its associated
approach selected.

3. The Missed Approach procedure arms when the aircraft

reaches the earlier of 2 NM before the FAF or 5 NM from
the runway end. This is indicated by the MISSED
APPROACH prompt at 4L.
4. The Missed Approach procedure is activated by:
■ Pressing Takeoff / Go-Around (TOGA) switch, OR

■ Pressing 4L MISSED APPROACH prompt.

CAUTION: The Missed Approach procedure should not be

activated until the decision to miss the approach is made.

5. Once selected, the following actions occur:

■ Any portion of the flight plan that is past MAP is
replaced by the missed approach procedure, including
vertical guidance.
■ The APRCH annunciator extinguishes. The FMS returns
to terminal mode sensitivity from approach mode for
wider tolerance navigation tracking.
6. LNAV (LNV) mode must be used to fly the stored FMS missed
approach procedure.

VERTICAL NAVIGATION
VNAV provides commands to the flight guidance computer for
controlling vertical path of aircraft. FMS VNAV can be used
through entire flight. VNAV can climb, cruise, and descend on
pilot selected speed schedules. It may also provide descent path
guidance for crossing fixes at specified altitudes much like a
glideslope. Engage VNAV on Flight Guidance Panel.

To engage VNAV, the following conditions must be met:

■ FMS must be selected NAV source

■ Performance must be initialized

■ LNAV must be engaged

GENERAL VNAV RULES

■ VNAV available for all phases of flight.

■ PERF INIT must be completed for VNAV computations. VNAV
uses speed and climb, cruise and descent information. PERF –
VNAV UNAVAILABLE message indicates missing initialization
data.
■ Vertical flight level change denoted as VFLC(H).
■ Climbs flown with VFLC(H) only.
■ Descents are flown with VFLC(H) or VPATH.
■ VNAV never passes through altitude selector level.
■ Pilot sets altitude selector only to ATC cleared altitudes.
■ VNAV keeps aircraft as high as possible as long as possible.
■ Path angles are from 1° to 6°.

Challenger/Hawker FMS Taskbook

66 Developed for Training Oct 00
■ In VPATH, path guidance is always followed except:
■ when aircraft approaches VMO/MMO

■ when aircraft encounters speed limit altitude constraint

(e.g., 250 knots at 10,000 feet)
■ Speed protection and LATCHED SPEED are active in VFLC(H). If
FMS has entered LATCHED SPEED mode (automatic), it is
displayed on ACTIVE FLT PLAN page 1 at 1R. It latches as speed
command, the current speed during automatic transitions of
VNAV submodes and if there is a significant difference between
actual and target speed.
■ The LATCHED SPEED mode can be removed by deleting it at
1R on page 1 of ACTIVE FLT PLAN
■ If an altitude selector is set above (climbs) or below (descents)
current altitude, FMS commands autopilot to begin a climb
(VFLC(H)) or descend (VFLC(H) or VPATH).
■ Engage VNAV by selecting FMS as NAV source and selecting
VNAV button on Flight Guidance panel. EFIS annunciates
active submode of VNAV on right side of EADI.
■ VPATH default descent angle is part of performance
initialization. Displayed angles may be changed by the crew
as required.
■ When altimeter is adjusted to display height above the ground
(QFE) rather than sea level, VNAV should NOT be used.
■ If altitude selector is properly set, VNAV observes flight plan
constraint altitudes.
■ A Vertical Track Alert is issued 60 seconds prior to any time
the FMS commands a vertical change from level flight to either
a climb or descent. A vertical alert is issued 1,000 feet before
level off unless the level off altitude is set on altitude selector.

VNAV CONSTRAINTS

■ Speed
■ Altitude
■ Descent Angle

VNAV ARM

■ VNAV Mode when initially selected. Monitors aircraft position

and altitude against altitude selector and, if any, the next
waypoint and altitude constraint. Determines when to capture
an appropriate mode.
■ This mode does not actually control aircraft vertically. Selected
vertical flight director mode is used until FMS transitions out
of VNAV ARM.

Challenger/Hawker FMS Taskbook

Developed for Training Oct 00 67
VFLC(H) (Flight Level Change)

■ Used during climbs and, unless a path defined, during

descents.
■ Speed hold to programmed speeds.
■ Climbs or descends as appropriate through power changes.

VASEL (Altitude Select)

■ Same as altitude capture to level aircraft at VNAV supplied

target altitude (constraint or selector).
■ Flight Guidance Computer controls pitch of aircraft to capture
altitude.

VALT (Altitude Hold)

■ Same as altitude hold.

■ If VNAV disengaged while in VALT, flight director mode
becomes pitch hold, not altitude hold.

VPATH (Descent Path)

■ Use only during descents where waypoint altitude constraint

has been entered. Similar to a glideslope.
■ FMS computer maintains desired path by controlling pitch to
maintain it. Power changes speed only.

VNAV OFFSET

■ Use to cross XX miles before or after a waypoint. Places

waypoint at specified distance with a PD (Place/Distance)
waypoint.
1. DEFINE a PLACE with keyboard or line select place from
flight plan to scratchpad.
2. ENTER a “/” to indicate next entry is a bearing. If known,
enter bearing. If bearing not known or along programmed
route, enter another “/” to indicate next entry is a distance.
3. ENTER distance from the PLACE to cross. If DRK is place and
20 miles the distance, entry is DRK//20.
4. With left line select key, enter this into flight plan over the
PLACE if crossing before, or over the subsequent PLACE if
crossing after.
5. ENTER altitude constraint at adjacent right line select key
location.

CAUTIONS FOR VNAV APPROACH OPERATIONS

Refer to HONEYWELL TECHNICAL NEWSLETTER 9/99 for complete

discussion.

The FMS through VNAV flies a vertical path from FAF to runway.
This single path emulates an ILS glideslope, but uses barometric
altitude from ADC as basis for computing glideslope. There are
limitations due to source used to determine aircraft height.

The vertical path flown by the FMS is susceptible to errors from

barometric altitude. These errors occur when aircraft is flown in
non-standard atmospheric conditions. The two largest factors
are non-standard pressure and temperature.

Non-standard pressure error is accounted for by setting correct

altimeter setting on the altimeter.

The ADC in computing vertical path does not compensate for

non standard temperature. When operating at airports with
extreme cold temperatures, consider the following:
■ True altitude is lower than indicated altitude; therefore, aircraft
height above terrain is decreased. Use an altitude correction
chart to compensate for these conditions when operating in
terminal area.
■ FMS vertical approach paths do not align with VASI. If a 3°
angle constraint is placed on a runway waypoint, FMS flies a
3° descent based on barometric altitude. Because of extreme
cold temperature, true altitude of aircraft is lower compared to
standard atmospheric conditions. In this case FMS vertical path
is lower than VASI, resulting in low indications on VASI.

Use EXTREME CAUTION continuing below MDA on FMS

constructed vertical paths because:
■ terrain clearance not calculated in construction of VPATH.

■ error due to non-standard atmosphere can change descent

angle to unusable or unsafe paths.

WIND AND TEMPERATURE BLENDING

FMS blends entered winds and temperatures with current
position sensed wind and temperature in a pro-rated method.
■ At 400 NM, wind and temperature data is blended at 20%
sensed and 80% entered wind and temperature.
■ At 200 NM, wind and temperature data is blended at 50%
sensed and 50% entered wind and temperature.
■ At present position to 200 NM, wind and temperature data is
100% sensed and 0% entered wind and temperature.

1. Displayed wind and temperature and WIND/TEMP page

are a blended value and may not exactly reflect pilot
entered value.
2. NO ENTRY – ISA temperature and zero wind is assumed
for each waypoint at all altitudes
3. AVERAGE ENTRY ONLY as entered on PERF INIT 4/5 –
applies to every waypoint in flight plan. It is biased
downward to show lesser winds at lower altitudes.
4. ENTRY AT WAYPOINT (PERF PLAN) – When an entry is
made, it erases any previous entry and carries the new
value forward until another entry made or reached.

NOTE: If wind and temperature deviations are fairly constant

over length of trip, or if trip is short, the average wind
and temperature deviation on PERF INIT page 4/5 is
normally adequate. If wind and temperature vary,
waypoint entries should be made with PERF PLAN page
after an average wind entry has been made or in place
of it. Wind entries are applied forward so an entry is
not necessary at each waypoint.

OPERATIONAL NOTE SUMMARY

1. Each FMS must be individually initialized. Positions are

never transferred between units. The first FMS to be
initialized loads all installed IRS positions. If first position is
incorrect, all IRUs need to be recycled back again to ALIGN,
then again to NAV to install new position.
2. IRU position may only be initialized or updated on the
ground. In-flight updating is not permitted.
3. Starting with NZ 5.2, it is possible to store an ACTIVE FLT
PLAN until aircraft becomes airborne. With previous
versions, it is not possible to store a flight plan after building
it in the active mode. It must be stored first, then activated.
4. CLR key used exclusively for editing scratchpad entries
while DEL key used primarily in flight plan section.
5. Only named waypoints and airways may be placed in
stored flight plan.
6. SIDs and STARs cannot be inserted into stored flight plan.
7. Not all SIDs, STARs, and approaches are in the database
due to FMS limitations and the way some procedures are
defined by the controlling agency.
8. Circle-to-Land approaches are not supported in navigation
database.
9. Both FMSs must be ON anytime data inserted or modified in
one of the custom databases (e.g. Pilot Defined Waypoints
and/or Stored Flight Plans).
10. In order to delete a hold, the aircraft must not have reached
holding fix.
11. In order to exit a hold, aircraft must be established in hold.
12. If EXIT (4L) is pressed one minute or less prior to entering
hold, the holding pattern is deleted from flight plan.
13. Transfer of flight plans between FMSs is not permitted while
established in a holding pattern.
14. The standard course intercept by FMS is 45°.
15. All required data must be entered on the PERF INIT pages
for FMS to display VNAV predictions.
16. FUEL MGT and PROGRESS page 2 always show fuel
remaining based on actual fuel flow calculations.

Challenger/Hawker FMS Taskbook

92 Developed for Training Sep 01
17. Only Non-Precision, Non-Localizer Approaches may be
flown by FMS.
18. Using VNAV for path control may not always be the best
option for an approach
19. When an approach, missed approach, or alternate flight
plan has been entered into FMS, it is not displayed on EFIS
until activated. It may be reviewed, however, in the FMS
any time it has been selected.
20. The Missed Approach procedure should not be activated
until the decision to miss the approach has been made.
21. For LRC and Manual Cruise speeds, optimum altitude is where
specific range is optimized (typically close to ceiling altitude).
MAX SPD optimum altitude is where TAS is maximized
(generally close to the VMO/MMO crossover point). MAX END
optimizes altitude where fuel flow is minimized.
22. The OPTIMUM altitude is short trip limited which results in
a computed altitude adjusted downward if flight is not long
enough to climb to optimum altitude.
23. While not prohibited by limitations (as with holding
patterns) closely monitor approaches with procedure turns
and arc transitions between FMSs, while approaching initial
fix, or established on approach. Ensure that required
procedure transferred completely and correctly.

NZ-8801 TO BUT NOT INCLUDING NZ-9402 FMZ

SOFTWARE OPERATIONAL DIFFERENCES
FMZ installations prior to NZ-9402 do not contain all features
previously described. Some functions have the same features,
but operate differently. Common differences are described in
the following section.

HOLDING

Pre-NZ–9402 software allows only HOLDING instead of

PATTERN selection available with later software. Only one
holding pattern may be designated at any one time. Pattern
REVIEW PAGE not available.

PERFORMANCE INITIALIZATION

1. PRESS 4R on active flight page to activate PERF INIT.

■ Review and update three pages of data as required. To
update or change, type correct value to scratchpad and
press appropriate line select key to change.
■ Minimum required data entries for PERFORMANCE INIT
are shown on following page.

NOTE: All required data must be entered on PERF INIT pages

for FMS to display VNAV predictions.

NOTE: FMZ series has several methods to compute fuel and

time remaining to destination. The result of these
computations is displayed on PROGRESS page 1. FUEL
MGT and PROGRESS page 2 always show fuel
remaining based on ACTUAL fuel flow calculations.

has been completely initialized at least once after
manufacture or repair.
2 If minimum required data not entered, VNAV capability
and fuel and time predictions are not available.
3 Numbers in () refer to the applicable PERF INIT page.
4 Data not required. This was used while on the ground to
affect the time and fuel prediction.
5 NZ-9004/9005 automatically computes cruise fuel flow
value. After approximately 10 flights, this computed
value is presented in cruise FF window in small characters.
Pilot can also enter a value in this window that the FMS
uses without any climb/descent compensation. Or, pilot
can delete computed value to force FMS to use only
measured (actual) fuel flow in its calculation.
6 NZ-9102/9112 offers two types of fuel and time
calculations. This choice is made through MAINTENANCE
2/2 FC entry. With PERF GS/FF ON, FMS uses entered
cruise fuel flow to predict fuel flow at destination. With
PEF G/S OFF, entered fuel flow is used without regard
for phase of flight to predict fuel at destination.
Regardless of choice, if no entry is made, calculations
are based on current actual fuel flow only.
7 Cruise IAS/MACH requires entry of expected indicated
cruise IAS and MACH values.
8 In software prior to NZ-9004/9005, and anytime with
NZ-9102/9112, when a fuel flow value is not entered,
it is possible to have an erroneous fuel remaining
prediction on PROGRESS page.
9 NZ-9102/9112 lets PERF GS/FF to be selected ON or
OFF (see note 6). If PERF GS/FF is selected OFF,
PROGRESS page 3/3 does not display entries for cruise
winds or cruise fuel flow.
