Legal Idioms in Use

1. Read the definitions for the following idioms and find their equivalents in the Ukrainian
language.

1. legal age – adultness


2. an open and shut case – easily solved case as the facts are clear
3. Jersey justice – very severe punishment, speedy and effective
4. to bend the law – to cheat a little bit without breaking the law
5. Jury is out – smth has not been decided
6. burden of proof – the responsibility for proving that smth is true
7. signed, sealed and delivered – to be officially or legally confirmed and done
8. to bring someone to book – to punish smb and make the person explain his behavior
9. spirit of the law – means exactly what the law says / letter of the law – means not to put
the strict observation of the law
10. Sod`s law (US Murphy`s law) – the principle that if it is possible for smth to go wrong it
will go wrong
11. null and void – having no legal force, no longer legally accepted
12. a slap on the wrist – a gentle warning or punishment; a small punishment when more
severe is deserved
13. to be caught red-handed – to be caught in the act of doing smth wrong such as cheating
or stealing
14. to grease someone`s palm – to give someone money in exchange of a favour
15. (to do smth) under the table – smth is done secretly usually because it`s illegal and
unethical
16. with no strings attached – without any special demand or limits when you don`t expect
anything in return
17. last will and testament – a legal document that a person creates before dying; it contains
notes and essential elements dedicated to family, friends
18. to turn a blind eye (and a deaf ear) to smth – to ignore smth that you know is wrong or
illegal (the origin of this expression can been found in the naval battle of Copenhagen in
1801 when two admirals Nelson and Parker disagreed over war tactics
19. cease and desist (letter, orders) – stop doing smth such as operating a business because
of a legal order; official order to stop illegal activity from a court or government agency
20. a grace period – extra time you are given to pay money you owe without paying an
additional amount
21. a fine print – footnotes at the bottom of the document that explain or clarify the deal; it
holds the details, terms, conditions, warnings to understand all the conditions of a contract
before agreeing to them
