on Reading by Parents (SHARP) 2022 from July 25 , 2022 to August 12,
2022. The activity was mandated by the Department of Education ,School
Division of South Cotabato with the Division memorandum CID No. 067, s.
2022.

VI. Introduction of the Program/Activity


 Background and Rationale
Teaching reading to non-readers today is different from the past. Teachers
need to focus on extensive instruction especially to non-readers.

“ Reading is not a skill that be developed through simple exposure to text,


but rather is a skill that must be explicitly taught and often with a great
deal and effort ( Goodman, LIbenson, & Wade-Woolley 2010).

The year 2020 has turned the lives of many people upside down due to
the outbreak of the COVID- 19 Pandemic. Pupils / learners were the one
being affected the most. The face to face classes has been suspended in
many schools in many countries.

As the DepEd South Cotabato launches the 15-Day SHARP Program (


SUMMER HOME ASSISTANCE on READING by PARENTS ) which aims to help
the struggling readers read and enable them to comprehend what they

capacities in teaching reading.

 Objectives
Our Summer Home Assistance on Reading by Parents has:
1. proved reading ability among slow and non- readers.
2. improved the learners oral reading fluency.
3. Demonstrated involvement at home-by reading with their
children.
4. Monitored children’s reading skills.

 VIII. Highlights of the Program/Activity


The Bentung Elementary school launched the program through an
orientation with the parents together with the reading teachers.
After the orientation learners were assigned to their respective reading
teachers according to their level.
Struggling readers participated in the every classroom activities
such as games and other drills.
The SHARP Program ended up with a culmination activities such as
spelling with cvc pattern ,reading short passages and awarding of
certificates.

IX. Monitoring and Evaluation Analysis

The SHARP Program was monitored by the assigned reading teachers and
school reading coordinator through the participation of the parents of the
learners.

X. Overall Impressions, Comments and Issues Encountered

The program was a successful one since there were lots of parents who
participated and monitored their children at school every day.
Facilitators were very eager to give the assistance every learner needs
during the reading program.
Learners were very excited to come to school everyday to learn.

Implementation of the program should be done every summer since it was a big
help to all struggling readers.
