POETRY

This literary type is usually written in lines and


is characterized by having the element of
rhythm, sound, imagery, and form.
Its main purpose is to express feelings,
thoughts, and ideas.
Narrative Poetry

This poetry tells a story and has the elements of a


narrative such as characters, setting, conflict, etc.
"Bayani ng Bukid" by Al Perez: This poem tells the
story of a farmer's life and his contributions to society. It's a
simple yet powerful narrative that highlights the heroism in
everyday life
Dramatic Poetry
This is an emotionally appealing drama written in verse that tells
a story and is intended to be recited or sung in front of the
audience by a character speaking in poetry.
Example: Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is an
excellent example of dramatic poetry. The play is a tragedy
that uses poetic language to convey the intense emotions
and actions of its characters. Shakespeare's use of iambic
pentameter and various poetic devices enhances the
dramatic effect of the story
Lyric Poetry

It is the most common type of poetry that focuses on


expressing feelings rather than telling a story. "Bayan Ko" by
Jose Corazon de Jesus: This poem is a patriotic piece that
expresses deep love and longing for the Philippines. It has
been set to music and is often sung as a symbol of national

A soliloquy is a type of
monologue where a character
speaks their thoughts aloud,
usually while alone on stage. This
allows the audience to hear the
character's inner thoughts and
feelings.
A haiku is a traditional Japanese form of poetry
consisting of three lines with a syllable pattern
of 5-7-5. It often captures a moment in nature
or an emotion.

An old silent pond

Splash! Silence again.
An ode is a type of lyrical poem that
praises or glorifies a person, place, thing,
or idea. It often has an elevated style and
varied or irregular meter.

Example:
"Ode to the West Wind" by Percy
Bysshe Shelley celebrates the power and
beauty of the wind.
An elegy is a poem of serious reflection,
typically lamenting the loss of someone
who has died. It often expresses sorrow
and mourning.

Example:
"O Captain! My Captain!" by Walt
Whitman mourns the death of President
Abraham Lincoln.
A sonnet is a 14-line poem with a specific
rhyme scheme and meter, usually iambic
pentameter. There are different types of
sonnets, such as the Shakespearean (or
English) and Petrarchan (or Italian)
sonnets.
Example:
"Sonnet 18" by William Shakespeare:

A song is a short poem or set of
words set to music. Songs are
meant to be sung and often have a
repetitive structure and rhyme.
Example:
"Bayan Ko" is a famous Filipino

PROSE
It is a form of written or spoken
language that follows the natural flow
of speech and grammatical structure,
without a metrical pattern or rhyme
scheme.

aims to evoke a single effect or
mood.
A novel is a long, fictional
narrative that explores

great detail. It often involves
