Elements of Communication
Communication involves several key elements that work together to ensure the effective
transmission of information. These elements are:
1. Sender: The person who initiates the communication and sends the message. The
sender encodes the message in a form that can be understood by the receiver, such as
through language, gestures, or symbols.
2. Message: The information or content that the sender wants to convey to the receiver.
This can be in the form of words, gestures, images, or any other medium that carries
meaning.
3. Channel/Medium: The means by which the message is transmitted from the sender to
the receiver. This can be verbal (spoken or written words), non-verbal (body language,
facial expressions), or digital (emails, text messages).
4. Receiver: The person or group to whom the message is directed. The receiver decodes
the message and interprets its meaning.
5. Feedback: The response from the receiver to the sender. Feedback is crucial as it
indicates whether the message was understood as intended and whether the
communication was successful.
Types of Communication
Communication can be broadly categorized into two types based on the channels or mediums
used:
1. Verbal Communication: This type of communication involves the use of spoken or
written words to convey a message. It is further divided into:
○ Oral Communication: This includes face-to-face conversations, speeches,
phone calls, and any form of communication where spoken words are used.
○ Written Communication: This involves the use of written symbols or text to
convey a message, such as letters, emails, reports, and books.
