Liturgy of Reconciliation and Forgiveness

(For use when no priest is available for confession)

By: Sir Ariel T. Villaflor

Retreat Master (Leader):

My dear brothers and sisters, we have gathered in the presence of our merciful God. Though no
priest is here to offer sacramental absolution, we trust that God, who reads our hearts, sees our
sorrow and desires to forgive us. Let us open ourselves to His mercy as we pray together.
Leader:
Let us begin, as we always do,
✝️In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. AMEN
Opening Song: AWIT NG PAGHILOM by Fr. Arnel Aquino, SJ
All: Loving and merciful Father, You know us better than we know ourselves. You see the
secrets of our hearts, and yet You never stop loving us. In this moment of silence and prayer, we
come to You, burdened yet hopeful, broken yet longing to be made whole. Cleanse us, heal us,
and make us new. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Scripture Reading: John 8: 1-11
A reading for the Gospel according to John:
Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, but early the next morning he was back again at the
Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. As he was speaking, the
teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of
adultery. They put her in front of the crowd. “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was
caught in the act of adultery. The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?”
They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus
stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. They kept demanding an answer, so he stood
up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” Then
he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.
When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until
only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. Then Jesus stood up again and
said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?” “No,
Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”

SILENCE AND MEDITATION:

(During the meditation, ask the participants to write their sins on a sheet of paper. If they are ready, then they can
go near to the altar then ask god for forgiveness then burn the paper as a sign of leaving their sins and sinned no
more.)

Leader:
As a sign of our desire to leave our sins behind and walk in the light of Christ, I invite each of
you to come forward to the altar (sacred space) and burn the paper as a sign that you will leave
all your sins and sinned no more.
As you do so, whisper a personal prayer to God asking for His mercy and forgiveness.
Act of Contrition (Communal Prayer)
All: My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do
good, I have sinned against You, whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with Your
help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus
Christ suffered and died for us. In His name, my God, have mercy. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Prayer of Assurance
Leader: Though no priest is present to absolve us sacramentally, we trust in the mercy of God
who hears the cry of a contrite heart. Let us pray:
All: Loving God, You welcome us with open arms. Even when we stray far from You, Your mercy
reaches out to bring us home. We trust in Your love, we rely on Your grace, and we rest in the
assurance that You forgive all who truly seek Your mercy. Help us to walk forward in freedom,
forgiven, renewed, and filled with peace. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Closing Song: PANANAGUTAN Fr. Eduardo Hontiveros, SJ

Sending Forth (Blessing)

Leader: Go now, reconciled in your hearts and strengthened by God’s mercy. Be merciful to
others, as God has been merciful to you.
All: Amen.
