CHILDREN’S SERVICES

Job Summary:
This is an exciting opportunity for a 12month fixed term consultant to join a well-established
neurodevelopmental and neurodisability team a St George’s University Hospital NHS FoundationTrust and
meet rising demand in most of our specialist teams within Neurodevelopmental Paediatrics and the Looked
After Children (LAC) Services. The successful candidate will work across and deliver care for the LAC,
Developmental Paediatrics, ADHD and ASD sub-specialties.
This post is part of the NDND (Neuro-Developmental & Neuro-Disability) care group within the Children’s
Directorate. Within the NDND care group the following services are included: Developmental Paediatrics,
Educational Paediatrics, ASD, ADHD, Looked after Children, Neurodisability and District Epilepsy. There are
8 consultants and associated staff. The team is integrated with the other paediatric services in St George’s
hospital, which is unique and provides excellent links with other specialities. The Paediatric Directorate has
a strong ethos of peer support and professional development. The developmental team is based with the
other specialty teams on the St George’s Hospital campus where the post holder will have an office, IT,
clerical and secretarial support.
The team hold a GRID post in Community Paediatrics and regularly has ST3 trainees attached to the team.
Occasionally, other training degrees join the department.
The Neurodevelopmental Paediatric Service is the largest sub speciality service within the NDND care group
with approximately 1000 new referrals into the service in a year. Children are seen for developmental
assessments at secondary Paediatric clinics at St George’s Hospital site and in community outreach clinics.
All consultants have admitting rights and access to facilities for investigation at St George’s Hospital.
Wandsworth has developed special schools and units/resource bases for learning and physical disability,
emotional and behavioural problems, visual and hearing impairment and autism.
Close by is the Early Years Centre (EYC), a joint Health and Local Authority service catering for children with
special needs up to 8 years of age. Co-located in the EYC are Contact, who provides a wide range of support
services and the Wandsworth Autism Advisory Service (WAAS). The EYC currently provides a range of
assessment and outreach services It has a particular role in relation to children with Autistic Spectrum
Disorders and other communication disorders who make up the majority of the children assessed in the form
of a multidisciplinary assessment with a team of highly specialist Speech and Language Therapists. The ASD
service has undergone a lot of transformation since 2020 and has improved the assessment experience and
impact on waiting times. The ASD service is in line with the NICE guidelines.
The specialist ADHD service manages about 900 children assessing around 150 new patients per year. The
service is supported by two ADHD nurse specialists. A multi-disciplinary meeting is held weekly.
The Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) service for children with special educational needs
has very good relationships with the Education and Social Services. The department contributes medical
assessments for more than 300 children per year undergoing assessment for Education, Health and Care
Plans (EHCPs), we collaborate with the therapists’ team and communicate with other Paediatric specialties
and CAMHS to ensure that a bespoke comprehensive medical/health plan is assembled for each child to help
the children achieve their potential in learning.
The Complex Neurodisability service cares for children with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, neuromuscular
disorders, progressive neurological conditions and neurodevelopmental problems requiring investigation.
Joint neurology, joint orthopaedic and joint respiratory clinics are held at regular intervals. Transition
neurodisability clinics are held with the adult neurology consultant specializing in spasticity to ensure a smooth
transition of paediatric neurodisability to adult neurology service. The service is supported by a neurodisability
nurse specialist.
The second tier ( District) paediatric epilepsy service at St George’s Hospital (assessing over 100 new
patients per year), is provided by 2 consultants from the Neurodisability/Epilepsy specialist team. There are
well established joint neurology clinics and epilepsy transition clinics with the adult epilepsy neurologists. The
service is supported by an Epilepsy Nurse Specialist.
Child Safeguarding
Responsibility for providing medical examinations for children with safeguarding concerns is now shared
between the Accident & Emergency department and the General Paediatric Ambulatory Team.
Children thought to have suffered acute child sexual abuse are referred to the specialist regional centre based
at King’s College Hospital (the Haven).
Children for whom there is concern about possible chronic sexual abuse or who require follow up are seen in
a dedicated clinic run by the Designated Doctor for Child Safeguarding in conjunction with one of the
Developmental consultants and, where indicated, with support from the genitourinary medicine team.
The Designated Doctor for Child Safeguarding is the lead medical advisor liaising with the Designated Nurse
for Child Safeguarding and the Named professionals within St George’s. The Designated Doctor is co-located
with the Developmental Team and works very closely with the department providing clinical support and
advice.

Educational Activities
There are a number of departmental meetings. These meetings frequently involve members of other
disciplines. There are also separate meetings run by the neonatal, infectious diseases, community and
neurology teams.
There are very active programmes of clinical and research meetings in other departments throughout the
medical school. All staff are invited to attend.
Teaching
The Trust is a major centre of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. The post holder will be expected
to contribute to the educational activities of the department. A paediatric advanced life support course has
recently been established and a simulator suite has been set up in the postgraduate centre.
Research/Special Interest
There is much on-going research and collaboration with other departments. Research will be encouraged,
and it is hoped the appointee would wish to take advantage of the facilities available.
Administrative Support
Secretarial/administrative support is already established in the unit. Dedicated office space, telephone,
computer etc. is available within the unit.

Provide clinics for the assessment and management of children with suspected
neurodevelopmental delay or disorders including ADHD, ASD and SEND

This is a service focussed role. The precise job plan and clinics will depend on the skills and
experience of the successful applicant and in negotiation with the relevant Clinical Leads and
