THE LEGACY OF BABYLON

A Presentation on Babylon’s Historical Significance and Contributions

With Ali Alsairafi

And Faisal AlBaker
Research
• Time Period: Persia conquered Babylon in 539 BCE, and its
life as a cultural center was over. • Important Rulers: •
Hammurabi (c. 1792–1750 BCE): A key contribution made by
him comprises the formulation of the Code of Hammurabi,
one of the first ever-written laws. • Nebuchadnezzar II (c.
605–562 BCE): Hanging Gardens and Ishtar Gate made
Babylon into a cultural marvel. • Key Achievements: •
Advances in astronomy and math (base-60 system). • The
Code of Hammurabi set rules for justice. • Built impressive
Ziggurats, or temple towers. • Society: People were farmers,
traders, priests, or builders. The king led society. • City: The
city of Babylon was famous for its massive walls, the Ishtar
Gate, and the Etemenanki Ziggurat. It was located on the
banks of the Euphrates River in what is now modern Iraq.
Journal Entry
6:00 AM:
I wake up as the sun rises over the Euphrates. My small mudbrick house is near the market. I eat some flatbread and dates, simple
but filling, and put on my wool tunic.

7:00 AM:
I head out to the fields, where I work growing barley and wheat. The sun is hot, but the soil by the river is rich. It’s hard work, but I
feel proud of the crops.

12:00 PM:
Time for a break. I sit with the other workers and share yogurt and more flatbread. It’s basic, but it keeps us going.

3:00 PM:
I finish work and walk home. On the way, I look up at the Ziggurat of Marduk, its towering steps reaching toward the sky. It’s a
reminder of Babylon’s strength and power.

5:30 PM:
I get home to my wife, Tashmetu, and the children. Tashmetu has prepared a stew of lentils and onions. We eat together, and the kids
play with a clay ball in the courtyard.

9:00 PM:
Night falls, and we lie down on our mats to sleep. I feel thankful for my family and our little life here in Babylon, with its grand
buildings and simple joys.
Reflection
What I found most interesting about
Babylon was how smart they were with
math and astronomy, especially with
their base-60 system, which we still
use today. Their buildings, like the
Ishtar Gate and the Ziggurat, were so
impressive. It made me curious about
what daily life was really like for
regular people, like farmers, who lived
in such an amazing city. I’d love to
learn more about their everyday lives.
Reflection
Evaluation of My Babylon Project:
• Research:
I included key details about Babylon, like famous rulers, important achievements (such as the Code
of Hammurabi and Ishtar Gate), and what daily life was like for people.
• Creativity:
I made the project fun by writing a journal entry from the perspective of a Babylonian farmer,
showing their everyday life, food, and work alongside the city’s grand achievements.
• Presentation:
The project is clear and easy to read, with a focus on the most important facts. The journal format
makes it interesting and simple to understand.
• Reflection:
In my reflection, I shared what I found most surprising about Babylon, like their math and
architecture, and how curious I am to learn more about regular people’s daily lives there.
