IMPACT OF AUTOMATIVE SAFETY PRACTICES ON SECURITY

AWARENESS IN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

A Student Presented to the Faculty Members of the Senior High School

Department of Sigaboy Agricultural Vocational High School

In Partial Fulfillment of The Requirement in the Subject “Practical Research 2”

SEPTEMBER 2024

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Automotive safety practices are crucial in reducing the risk of

accidents and injuries, particularly for young individuals who are new drivers
or passengers. Senior high school students, being in the age group that is
beginning to drive or frequently ride in vehicles with peers, are at a higher
risk of encountering road accidents due to factors such as inexperience, peer
pressure, and lack of awareness about safety practices (Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, 2020). This study aims to quantitatively examine
how automotive safety practices impact the security awareness of senior
high school students.

Statistics from the World Health Organization (2018) indicate that

road traffic injuries are one of the leading causes of death among
adolescents globally. In particular, young drivers are more likely to engage in
risky driving behaviors, including speeding, not wearing seat belts, and
distracted driving. These behaviors can significantly increase the likelihood
of accidents. Despite the availability of information on safe driving practices,
there is a gap in the implementation and awareness among young drivers,
including senior high school students.

The Philippines faces unique challenges in promoting automotive

safety. The country has a high rate of motorcycle accidents, often attributed
to inadequate infrastructure, poor driver training, and a lack of enforcement
of traffic laws. A 2019 study by the Philippine National Police found that
motorcycle accidents accounted for a significant portion of road accidents,
highlighting the need for targeted safety interventions.

Within the Davao Region of the Philippines, the issue of

automotive safety is particularly relevant. The region has a growing
population and a rapidly expanding transportation network, leading to
increased traffic congestion and a higher risk of accidents. A 2020 report by
the Davao City Traffic and Transportation Management Office (CTTMO)
highlighted the need for improved road infrastructure, stricter traffic
enforcement, and public awareness campaigns to address the rising number
of traffic accidents in the region.

The present study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the

relationship between the adoption of automotive safety practices—such as
the use of seat belts, adherence to speed limits, and avoidance of distracted
driving—and the level of security awareness among senior high school
students. By using a quantitative approach, this research aims to measure
the extent to which these safety practices influence students’ awareness and
attitudes toward road safety, providing valuable data that can inform
educational policies and programs.
Statement of the problem

This study aims to assess how these practices impact students’

understanding and behavior regarding vehicle security.

1. What is the extent of automotive safety practices in term of:

1.1 Increased risky behavior ;

1.2 Offsetting of safety benefits ;

1.3 Shift in risk ?

2. What is the extent of the security awareness in terms of:

2.1 Knowledge ;

2.2 Attitude ;

2.3 Behavior?

3. Is there a significance relationship between the automotive safety

practices and security awareness among senior high school students?

Null hypothesis

There is no significance relationship between automotive safety

practices and security awareness.

Scope and limitation

The study focuses on evaluating the impact of automotive safety

practices on the security awareness of senior high school student’s at
Sigaboy Agricultural Vocational High School. Each respondents were given
the questionnaire. However, the study may be limited by the sample size and
the specific assessment tool used.

Significance of the study

This study delves into the critical relationship between

automotive safety practices and security awareness among automotive
servicing students in senior high school.
Future researchers. Future researchers might use my study to conduct
comparative analyses across different regions, age groups, or educational
systems to understand how varying environments impact the effectiveness
of automotive safety practices.

Parents. By identifying effective safety practices that enhance security

awareness, the research can guide parents on what habits to encourage,
such as consistent seatbelt use and understanding road signs.

Senior High School students. The study will raise awareness among
senior high school students about automotive safety practices and their
importance in preventing accidents.

Teachers. This study will also benefit the teacher for them to know the
automotive safety practices and security awareness.

Theoretical Framework

This theory emphasizes the role of observational learning, self-

efficacy, and reciprocal determinism in shaping individual behavior. In the
context of automotive safety, students learn by observing others, such as
parents or instructors, practicing safe driving techniques. This observation,
coupled with positive reinforcement and opportunities for practice, can
enhance their self-efficacy, or belief in their ability to perform safe driving
actions. Furthermore, the theory acknowledges the reciprocal influence
between individuals and their environment. For example, school policies,
community norms, and the availability of resources all play a role in shaping
students’ automotive safety practices. (Bandura, 1986)

This theory proposes that behavior is influenced by a combination

of attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. Students’
attitudes towards automotive safety, whether they perceive it as important
or not, significantly influence their engagement with safety practices.
Additionally, social norms, such as peer pressure or societal expectations
regarding safe driving, can exert a powerful influence on their behavior.
Finally, perceived behavioral control, or the belief in one’s ability to perform
a specific action, plays a crucial role. Students who believe they have the
skills and resources to practice safe driving are more likely to engage in
those practices. (Ajzen, 1991)

This model explains health behaviors based on perceived

susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and
cues to action. Applied to automotive safety, students’ perception of their
vulnerability to traffic accidents (susceptibility), the severity of potential
consequences (severity), the benefits of practicing safety (benefits), any
obstacles to safe driving (barriers), and external prompts (cues to action) all
influence their engagement with automotive safety practices. For example,
a student who perceives a high risk of getting into an accident (high
susceptibility) and understands the severity of potential injuries (high
severity) is more likely to engage in safe driving practices. (Rosenstock,
1966)

Conceptual framework

Figure 1. This conceptual framework outlines the key constructs

and their relationships within the research on the impact of automotive
safety practices on security awareness among senior high school students. It
visualizes the theoretical underpinnings and proposes a model for
understanding the interplay of these factors.

Definition of terms

The following terms are identified conceptually and operationally

for better understanding of the study.

Automotive safety practices. Represent a comprehensive

approach to minimizing the occurrence and consequences of traffic collision
involving motor vehicle . These practices encompass a wide range of
measures and technologies aimed at protecting vehicle occupants and
pedestrians. (Ulrich W. Seiffert)

Security awareness. Refers to the knowledge and practices

that individuals should adopt to protect vehicles from threats like theft,
unauthorized access, and cyber-attacks on modern vehicle systems. This
involves understanding risks, securing keys, locking vehicles, avoiding
leaving valuables visible, and being cautious of vehicle tracking systems or
digital vulnerabilities.
