Types of Respiration

Respiration is the process by which living organisms produce energy from food, involving breathing and cellular respiration. There are two types: aerobic respiration, which occurs in the presence of oxygen and produces more energy, and anaerobic respiration, which occurs in the absence of oxygen and produces less energy. The energy currency of the cell is ATP, which stores energy produced during respiration.

LIFE PROCESSES

RESPIRATION
Respiration is a process by which li ving organisms produce energy from food. (It usually needs oxygen).
It in vo lves: (i) BREATHI NG i.e, Gaseous exchan ge - Intake of oxygen from the atm osphere and release of
CO2 a nd (ii) CELLULAR RES Pl RATION i.e, Brea kdown o f simple food in order to release energy inside
th e cell.

Aerobic Respiration Anaerobic Respiration

Takes place in th e presence of oxygen. Takes place in the abse nce of oxygen.
Occurs in mitochondria. Occurs in cytop lasm and in yeast cells
End products arc CO2 and wa ter. particu larl y.
Comp lete oxidation of glu cose End products arc alcohol/ lac tic acid.

More amount of energy is re leased. CO 2 / lactic acid with release of energy.
One mo lecu le of glucose produces upto Less amoun t of energy is released. One
36 AT P of energy. molecule of glucose produces 2 ATP of
energy.
