A. Vocabulary (40 marks; 2 marks @)

You are writing an advice column in an entertainment magazine. Complete the
column with words/phrases from TAWB units 1, 15 and 16. Write the WHOLE
word/phrase on the Answer Sheets. Use each word/phrase ONCE only with the given
letter. Change the form of the word/phrase if necessary.

Get out of your head, and into the spotlight

by Ursula Chan

When you are a performer, nothing feels better than getting a big round of applause at the
end of your performance. It doesn’t matter whether you're an actor, musician, dancer, or a
comedian doing funny tricks as a (1) g_____, receiving praise from reviewers and the
audience feels (2) f_____.

As a beginner, though, this may feel like an impossible dream. When I started out (3)
p_____ ___ magic shows in front of audiences, I was more worried about their (4) p_____
of the show than the actual card tricks I was performing. Would they feel excited? Would
they think I was a (5) n_____ wasting everyone’s time? Or were they (6) i_____ and thought
that I was annoying? This caused me to appear distracted and self-conscious. This idea in
my mind negatively (7) i_____ the whole performance. Later, I realized there must be both
supportive and (8) h_____ audiences. We cannot expect that everyone is nice to artists.

Here’s my advice: forget the audience. Do you think that an acrobat flying high above the
rest of the circus, is thinking if she or he looks (9) g_____ to the audience? No! It takes
100% focus. You have to be totally (10) i_____ ___ the performance. This same idea can
be applied to every type of performance. The moment you think about what the audience
thinks of you is the moment you fail as a performer. It is understandable that everyone
wants to give an (11) i_____ show with everything perfect. However, how well you can
perform is (12) d_____ ___ your level of concentration. Therefore, if you don’t want your
art to be a disappointment, forget who’s in the crowd, and make your performance great for
its own sake.

What’s more, as an artist, it’s natural to doubt your abilities and feel (13) i_____ at
times. Everyone starts somewhere, and being an (14) a_____ is a crucial part of the artistic
journey. No one is born to be a professional from day one. When you forget lines or miss a

23-24/F3/ENG/P1/1E/QUE-RP 2
note, don’t think it is an (15) e_____. Try to (16) i_____ your weakness, and (17) r_____
on how you can improve the next time. Then, you need to be persistent in practising (18)
d_____ ___ ___ ___. Whenever there is an (19) o_____ to showcase your talent, just grasp
it! Ultimately, more and more people will (20) s_____ ___ and watch your performance.

B. Parts of Speech (6 marks; 1 mark @)

Here is a comment in response to the advice column about pop singers. Fill in each
blank with the correct form of the word given.

Pop singers have the ability to (1)(seduction) listeners with their catchy melodies and
wonderful performances. Usually, they have a (2)(perfect) blend of talent, image, and stage
presence. Some of them are as young as teenagers or just secondary school
(3)(graduation). While their catchy tunes can be (4)(impress) and uplifting, some others
may find them (5)(irritate) or overwhelming. Once they do anything wrong in public, or pose
an inappropriate comment online, certain audiences may be (6)(offend) easily. It will lead
to massive arguments between followers and haters. That’s why pop singers should notice
that they have great impact in society.

C. Sentence-making (6 marks; 2 marks @)

You are thinking of adding some comments about street performances or pop
singers to the advice column. Make sentences with given phrases in no less than 12

You are writing an email to your classmates about what to buy for Mike’s birthday.
Complete the email choosing the best option. Write the letters only.

Hi everyone,

As you all know, it’s Mike’s birthday in ten days. (1) ______, we can prepare a surprise

for him. He’s been such a nice and helpful friend to all of us, (2)_____ I think it’d be a

good idea to get him a gift. I’ve been chatting with him at school (3)______ I want to get

an idea of what he might need. Let me tell you some of my ideas.

First, I noticed the schoolbag he is using looks quite old. (4) ______, we can get him a

new one. (5)_______, he may not like the one we pick, and he may prefer choosing one

himself.

Second, a few of us noticed his scientific calculator was a bit broken. (6) ______ he can

use his phone calculator, he won’t be able to use that in exams. I know a shop with a

great bargain of less than HK$200. If no one knows any better deals, we may buy one

there.

Lastly, another possible gift would be a new pair of sports shoes. Did you see that his

old ones are falling apart? (7) ______ it being the most expensive option, a new pair of

sports shoes is the best gift as he really needs them. (8) ______, he can wear them on

non-school days.

If we can’t decide, we can just pool some money together so that he can buy whatever

he wants, though giving cash isn’t an ideal gift. Please take some time to review the

options. Let’s discuss after school next Monday.

Best,

Raymond

Part 3 Bonus (10 marks; 1 mark @)
This is an optional part. Fill in each blank with the most appropriate word. Use ONE word
only.

Being skinny is not the only way to be beautiful

Have a (1) at the advertisements on the street, on television or even on your mobile
phone. Most of the models you see are skinny.

Does being slim make someone beautiful? This question seems to be (2) . In Hong
Kong, people often judge others and say hurtful things about their bodies. Girls are
often told that they are chubby and bulky if they gain, and they are advised to go on a
diet. Many women in Hong Kong are obsessed with striving (3) a perfect body
shape. Some go on diets even if they are underweight. Some spend money on
expensive treatments to (4) unwanted fat.

This (5) culture not only affects adults but also adolescents. For many teenagers,
one of the biggest 6) they face is suffering from negative body image. Some want
to diet and lose weight even though they are healthy. A 2003 survey of 358 girls
between 15 and 21 years old in Hong Kong showed that 85 per cent wanted to weigh
less (7) only 4.8 per cent of them were actually overweight.

Some young people may even use extreme methods just to meet the social (8) of
beauty. (9) , these can develop into eating disorders. (10) to the Mayo Clinic
website, eating disorders are persistent eating behaviours that negatively
affect someone’s health, emotions and ability to function in daily life. Specifically in
Hong Kong, eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulmia, are becoming more
common among students.

This situation is certainly alarming. But why do so many teens want to be skinny?

23-24/F3/ENG/P1/1E/QUE-RP 8
Section II Reading Passage (30 marks)
Read the following passage and answer questions 1-16 on the Question-Answer Book.

Post-pandemic ‘revenge travel’

[1] Revenge is a dish best served cold. After more than two years of travel restrictions, mandatory
vaccinations, mask mandates and social distancing, this expression rings true for many travellers as they
are finally free to travel overseas again. ‘Revenge travel’ is one of the latest trends to emerge in the post-
pandemic era.

What is ‘revenge travel’?

[2] ‘Revenge travel’ is a term that was first posited back in 2020. It was predicted back then that, when
travel restrictions were finally lifted, holidaymakers would come back in droves to make up for lost time.
The term gained popularity on social media in 2021, and finally came to fruition in 2022 as more
countries began to open up and allow international travellers again.
[3] ‘The truth is that tourism is rebounding very, very quickly,’ Luís Araújo, president of the European
Travel Commission (ETC), said. ‘It’s quite impressive.’

[4] European airports had a nearly 250 percent increase in passenger volumes in the first half of 2022.
According to the credit card company Mastercard, short and medium-haul flight bookings in 2022
surpassed their pre-pandemic levels. And according to search engine Google, travel searches were above
their 2019 levels, while searches for passport appointments were up 300 per cent.

[5] Recovery rates do not seem to be slowing down in 2023. According to Skyscanner, a metasearch
engine and travel agency, 77 percent of the people it surveyed plan to go on more overseas trips than they
did in 2022.

[6] ‘Pent up demand is already delivering rapid growth,’ said David Goodger, Director of Tourism
Economics in Europe. He explained that this growth is driven by ‘excess savings accumulated during the
period when people couldn’t spend or travel as usual.’

[7] The excess savings that people have accumulated are also affecting the type of holidays they are
seeking. Before the pandemic, budget travel was a heavy focus for tourism marketing. Now, however,
there is a new emphasis on pricy upscale holidays. ‘A lot of enterprises, big and small, have spent the
past two years renovating their facilities, upgrading, investing in their hospitality—adapting to the new
needs of the customer,’ Araújo said. ‘We also see a lot of countries adjusting their communication to
high-end travel.’

[8] Black Tomato, a luxury tour company with headquarters in London, says that business is booming.
‘Demand for Europe is insane right now,’ said Brendan Drewniany, Director of Communications. ‘We’re
advising our clients that if they want to go to specific destinations in Europe at this point, they’re going
to have to be pretty open-minded about alternatives.’

23-24/F3/ENG/P1/1E/QUE-RP 9
[9] Drewniany said that in the first quarter of 2022, their clients spent 31 percent more per booking on
average. ‘We’re seeing a lot more multi-destination trips, and a lot more multi-generational ones,’ he
said. ‘People are travelling to celebrate milestones, and they want to bring the grandparents now.’

[10] Araújo said that more than anything, travellers are eager for new experiences. ‘I prefer to call it
“liberation travel” rather than “revenge travel”,’ Araújo said. ‘There’s an increase in people wanting to
stay in independent hotels, partly because they care about sustainability. And they’re looking for more
authentic experiences as well.’

[11] Katie Parla, who leads culinary tours in Rome, agrees. She explained that her bookings have risen
200 percent in recent months compared to the same period in 2019. ‘People are just so grateful to be
having these experiences,’ Parla said. ‘Often, they’re doing trips that they had planned to do in 2020, so
even when something is closed or things don’t go as planned, they’re tolerant and understanding. They’re
just so happy to be there.’

[12] In addition to seeking new and memorable experiences, Drewniany believes that people have
become more resilient in recent years. ‘You hear things like, oh, people are valuing experiences over
Rolexes, and I think that is the reality right now: people are putting their money into experiences,”
Drewniany said. However, he added, there’s something else in play. ‘After everything everyone’s been
through, there’s not a ton of fear about the unknown anymore. People know that if they’re scheduled to
go to London in October and for some reason, London locks down or something, they know that we’ll
figure it out. What you’re seeing renewed right now is this sort of inherent mindset of flexibility.’

Closer to home

[13] While Europe and North America have seen an uptick in travel, Hong Kong SAR has also been
affected. In the first eight months of 2022, only 5,900 travellers from Hong Kong SAR visited Japan – a
99.6 percent drop from the same period in 2019. Yet, in the first week of October of that year, more than
10,000 travellers from Hong Kong SAR visited the island nation.

[14] This sudden surge of visitors was due to policy changes by the governments of both Japan and Hong
Kong SAR. The Japanese government eliminated its daily arrival cap and began welcoming individual
travellers again. Meanwhile, Hong Kong SAR also eased its entry restrictions.

[15] ‘I want to eat Japanese sea urchin, so I’ll go straight to Kuromon Ichiba market in Osaka to have
seafood as soon as I get to Japan,’ said a traveller surnamed Man.

[16] ‘We thought of going to South Korea or Thailand, but we decided to go to Japan because we love
Japanese culture,’ said another traveller surnamed Ng. ‘Japan has lots of places to eat, go shopping and
have fun.’
