Hasbia : Morning Friends, I’m Hasbia La Ilma Eulaysa Syaefudin. My student number
is 23030330067.
Hasbia : Yeah, Of course. Oh my god, you don’t know about elephant toothpaste
experiment?
Nida : So, elephant toothpaste is a fun and safe science experiment that
demonstrates the rapid decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. It's a foamy eruption that looks
just like toothpaste erupting from a tube, but way bigger! That's why it's called elephant
toothpaste.
Navisa : Oh I see. What the purpose of this experiment?
Hasbia : It's a fun and visual way to see how a chemical reaction works and highlights
the role of catalysts in speeding up chemical reactions.
Navisa : Wow, that sounds really interesting. May I join you guys?
Livia : There are several tools and materials used in the experiment is clothes
bleach or vanish in place of hydrogen peroxside, dish soap, warm water, yeast, food coloring
and bottles.
Nida : The first step is to pour 1/2 cup of bleach into the bottle.
Hasbia : And then add food coloring to the bottle and stir or shake until the color is
evenly distributed like this. (While showing the color’s change)
Navisa : The next step is to mix the yeast with enough warm water to dissolve the
yeast.
Livia : After mixing well, pour the yeast solution into the bottle and observe the
reaction that occurs.
Nida : The reaction in this experiment that produces abundant white foam involves
two main chemical reactions. What are they?
Hasbia : First, in clothes bleach containing H2O2. H2O2 decomposes into water
(H2O) and oxygen (O2) with the help of a catalyst such as yeast as KI. This reaction
releases heat energy and produces oxygen bubbles.
Navisa : Now for the second reaction, the formation of foam. Oxygen bubbles are
trapped in the dish soap. The dish soap forms a micelle structure that traps oxygen. The air
bubbles combine and produce abundant white foam.
CLOSING
Hasbia : So, that was the elephant toothpaste experiment, science buddy! How was it
fun?
