Dolphins are regarded as the friendliest creatures in the sea and stories of them helping
drowning sailors have been common since Roman times. The more we learn about
dolphins, the more we realise that their society is more complex than people previously
imagined. They look after other dolphins when they are ill, care for sick mothers and
protect the weakest in the community, as we do. Some scientists have suggested that
dolphins have a language, but it is much more probable that they communicate with
each other without needing words. Could any of these mammals be more intelligent
than man? Certainly, the most common argument in favour of man's superiority over
them that we can kill them more easily than they can kill us is the least satisfactory. On
the contrary, the more we discover about these remarkable creatures, the less we
appear superior when we destroy them.
i. Write down the summary of the passage.
ii. Is the writer sure that Dolphins have a language? Support your answer from the text.
iii. What is the message contained in the concluding sentence (last sentence)?
iv. How are dolphins a complex society?
Q. 4. Read the following poetic lines and answer the questions appended to it. (6 Marks)
The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers;
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
i. What is the tone of the poem?
ii. Write down the theme of the poem?
iii. Write down the line which exemplifies both simile and personification.
Q. 5. Translate the following passage into Urdu. (5 Marks)
My protests, my apologies and the rest of my utterances were useless. I had let my
father down, and I was about to learn one of the most painful lessons of my life. Dad
began walking along the dusty roads. I quickly jumped in the car and followed behind,
hoping he would relent. I pleaded all the way, telling him how sorry I was, but he simply
ignored me, continuing on silently, thoughtfully and painfully.
