LECTURE 1:

TRIANGLE METHOD
The Triangle Method is a graphical and algebraic
technique used to analyze and solve problems that
involve three related quantities. In statics, these
quantities often represent forces, distances, and
angles within a system. By visually representing
these quantities as the sides of a triangle, we can
gain insight into their relationships and solve for
unknown variables.

THE RIGHT TRIANGLE

ENGR. RL BUGNA 9
Summary:

The Pythagorean Theorem and

trigonometric functions (SOH-
CAH-TOA) are fundamental tools
for solving problems involving
right triangles.
The Pythagorean Theorem is used
to determine side lengths, while
SOH-CAH-TOA is employed to
calculate angle measures.

ENGR. RL BUGNA 10
ENGR. RL BUGNA 11
THE NON - RIGHT TRIANGLE
A non-right triangle is any triangle
that does not contain a right angle
(90 degrees).
Unlike right triangles, special rules
like the Pythagorean Theorem and
SOH-CAH-TOA cannot be directly
applied to them. Instead, other
tools like the Law of Sines and the
Law of Cosines are used to solve
problems involving these
triangles.

ENGR. RL BUGNA 12
SINE LAW

When to use Sine Law:

1. Use when you know two angles and
one side (AAS or ASA).
2. Use when you know two sides and
an angle opposite one of them (SSA).
ENGR. RL BUGNA 13
COSINE LAW

When to use Cosine Law:

1. Use when you know three sides
(SSS).
2. Use when you know two sides and
the included angle (SAS).

FORCE

- Is a push or a pull.
- An interaction between two objects or between
an object and its environment.
- A vector quantity, with magnitude and direction.

Common Prefixes:
K – kilo M – mega G – giga

THE COMPONENT METHOD
This involves breaking down forces and
vectors into their horizontal and vertical
components. This method is used to
analyze and solve problems related to
equilibrium and stability of rigid bodies.
By resolving forces into their
components, it becomes easier to
calculate the net force and torque acting
on the body in different directions.
This approach is commonly used in
engineering and physics to analyze the
forces acting on structures and
mechanical systems.
