5.0 Construction Method

5.1 Method 1 - Shrinkage crack line, minor void, minor honeycomb and minor chip-off.
Shrinkage crack is only appeared at the surface of concrete as (shown as per
example picture below). Normally it appears with width not more than 0.25 mm.
Minor Void – Not stated in MS1293.

Minor Chip-off Minor Void

5.1.1 Identify the concrete product defect and marking the area.
5.1.2 The surface of the defect area shall be free from oil, grease, laitance, loose
particles or dust by using brush or blower.
5.1.3 For shrinkage crack line, Latex-108 with OPC shall be mix with Latex in
ratio approximately 1:1 by volume. The mixing shall be stirred until
mixture is homogeneous. (Details product of Latex-108 please refers
appendices.)
5.1.4 Apply lean mix by brush over the shrinkage crack lines and repeat the
operations until crack lines are closed up.
5.1.5 Final touch up, mix the OPC or skim coat and cementitious with water and
brush over repaired area in order to obtain a homogeneous color tone of
the original concrete face.
5.1.6 Leave the repaired product to open air curing before re-handling.

5.2 Method 2 - Crack line, void, honeycomb and chip-off

5.2.1 Crack line repair

5.2.1.1 Identify the concrete product defect and marking the area.
5.2.1.2 Form a V shape trough with width 10 – 25mm along the crack
line by using chisel or cutting machine.
5.2.1.3 Remove all loose, friable and potentially friable materials around
affected area by flushing with water so that concrete dust and
small particles are removed thoroughly.
5.2.1.4 Check the V shape trough to ensure that the crack was
completely removed.
5.2.1.5 Repeat items 5.2.1.1 – 5.2.1.4 until all cracks and friable
materials have been removed and sound concrete is exposed.
5.2.1.6 Prepare mix epoxy mortar as per manufacturer’s instructions.
(Details product of epoxy mortar please refer appendices UCI-
MOS clause 2.2) which is KEMSPEC UW, PSC Bondite 150 A/B or
equivalent – epoxy mortar. Currently our factory uses brand
KEMPSPEC UW.

5.2.1.7 Apply the prepared epoxy mortar to the V shape trough until
surface. Major crack is meaning that the crack is structural crack
or cracks more than half of wall. It is shall be rejected on Plant or
site. Based on MS 1293: Part 1: 1992 (Specification for Precast
Reinforced Concrete Box Culvert) residual test crack measuring
gauge shall not be more than 0.15 mm as shown in Figure
below. Residual crack is accepted to repair by using method
5.2.1.
5.2.1.8 Final touch up, mix the OPC with water and brush over repaired
area in order to obtain a homogeneous colour tone of the
original concrete face.
5.2.1.9 Leave the repaired product to open air curing before re-
handling.

5.2.2 Void, Honeycomb & Chip-off Repair

5.2.2.1 Identify the concrete product defect and marking the area.
5.2.2.2 Remove all loose, friable and potentially friable materials around
affected area by knocking or hacking until sound of concrete.
5.2.2.3 Remove concrete dust and loosen materials with water.
5.2.2.4 While the surface is still in wet condition, visual inspection to be
carried out to check on the integrity of concrete.
5.2.2.5 Repeat items 5.2.2.1 – 5.2.2.4 until all cracks and friable
materials have been removed.
5.2.2.6 Prepare mix epoxy mortar as per manufacturer’s instructions.
(Details product of epoxy mortar please refers appendices UCI-
MOS clause 2.2)
5.2.2.7 Apply an epoxy to honeycomb, chip-off or large void with
prepared epoxy mortar.
5.2.2.8 Final touch up, mix the OPC with water and brush over repaired
area in order to obtain a homogeneous colour tone of the
original concrete face.
5.2.2.9 Leave the repaired product to open air curing before re-
handling.

Hilti HIT-RE 500 V3 injection mortar may be applied in the temperature ranges given below. An
elevated base material temperature may lead to a reduction of the design bond resistance.

Max short term base material temperature
Short-term elevated base material temperatures are those that occur over brief intervals, e.g. as a
result of diurnal cycling.
Max long term base material temperature
Long-term elevated base material temperatures are roughly constant over significant periods of time.

For spacing (edge distance) smaller than critical spacing (critical edge distance) the design loads have to be reduced.
a) hef,min ≤ hef ≤ hef,max (hef: embedment depth)
b) h: base material thickness (h ≥ hmin)
c) The critical edge distance for concrete cone failure depends on the embedment depth h ef and
the design bond resistance. The simplified formula given in this table is on the save side.

Service temperature range

Hilti HIT-RE 500 V3 injection mortar may be applied in the temperature ranges given below. An
elevated base material temperature may lead to a reduction of the design bond resistance.

Base material Max. long term base Max. short term base

Max. short term base material temperature

Short term elevated base material temperatures are those that occur over brief intervals, e.g. as a
result of diurnal cycling.
Max. long term base material temperature
Long term elevated base material temperatures are roughly constant over significant periods of time.

For spacing (edge distance) smaller than critical spacing (critical edge distance) the design
loads have to be reduced.
a) both given values for drill bit diameter can be used
b) hef,min ≤ hef ≤ hef,max (hef: embedment depth)
c) h: base material thickness (h ≥ hmin)
d) The critical edge distance for concrete cone failure depends on the embedment
depth hef and the design bond resistance. The simplified formula given in this table is

Fire resistance

Temperature reduction factor kfi(θ)

The design value of the bond resistance fbd,fi under fire exposure has to be calculated by the following
equation:

If ⍬ > 42ºC:

If ⍬ > 305ºC:

= Design value of the bond resistance in case of fire in N/mm²

= Temperature in °C in the mortar layer.
= Reduction factor under fire exposure.
= Design value of the bond resistance in N/mm² in cold condition according to Table
C2 or C3 considering the concrete classes, the rebar diameter, the drilling method and
the bond conditions
according to EN 1992-1-1.
= Partial safety factor according to EN 1992-1-1
= Partial safety factor according to EN 1992-1-2

For evidence under fire exposure the anchorage length shall be calculated according to
EN 1992-1- 1:2004+AC:2010 Equation 8.3 using the temperature-dependent bond resistance fbd,fi.

Fitness for use

Some creep tests have been conducted in accordance with ETAG guideline 001 part 5 and TR 023 in
the following conditions: in dry environment at 50 °C during 90 days.
These tests show an excellent behaviour of the post-installed connection made with HIT-RE
500 V3: low displacements with long term stability, failure load after exposure above
reference load.

Electrical Conductivity
HIT-RE 500 V3 in the hardened state is not conductive electrically. Its electric resistivity is
661012 .m (DIN IEC 93 – 12.93). It is adapted well to realize electrically insulating
anchorings (ex: railway applications, subway).

Service temperature range
Hilti HIT-RE 500 V3 injection mortar may be applied in the temperature ranges given below. An
elevated base material temperature may lead to a reduction of the design bond resistance.

Temperature range I -40 °C to +80 °C +50 °C +80 °C

Max short term base material temperature

Short-term elevated base material temperatures are those that occur over brief intervals, e.g. as
result of diurnal cycling.
Max long term base material temperature
Long-term elevated base material temperatures are roughly constant over significant periods of time.
