Class : V LESSON – 8. MEASUREMENT

I. Short answer questions:

Q1. What is measurement? Name any three things we measure in our everyday
life.

A1. Measurement is the process of finding the size or quantity of something.

We measure: -

● Mass of the objects. (eg: - bag of potatoes)

● The length of a pencil or a cloth piece
● The capacity of a water bottle.

Q2. Discuss with examples how people measured length in ancient times.

A2. In ancient times, people used body parts to measure length. Various units
such as hand span, cubit, fathom, or arm span were used for this purpose.

● Hand span: - Hand span is the length between the tip of the thumb and
the tip of the little finger of a fully opened palm.
● Cubit: - The length between the tip of the middle finger of an opened
palm and the elbow is called cubit.
● Fathom: - It is the length between the outstretched arms.

Q3. What is a unit? Name any two units for measuring temperature.

A3. A fixed quantity that is used as a standard of measurement is called a unit.

Units used to measure temperature are degree Celsius (oC) or degree

Fahrenheit (oF).

Q4. What is length? Name four units of measuring length and their
conversions.

A4. Length is the size or measurement of its object from its one end to another.

● The four units of measuring length are millimetre(mm), centimetre(cm),

metre(m), kilometre(km).
● The units of length can be changed from one to another.
For example: -
10 millimetres(mm) = 1 centimetre(cm)
100 centimetres(cm) = 1 metre(m)
1000 metres(m) = 1 kilometre(km)

Q5. Arrange the following lengths in their increasing magnitude:

1 metre, 1 centimetre, 1 kilometre, 1 millimetre.

A5. The following lengths in their increasing magnitude are:

1 millimetre, 1 centimetre, 1 metre, 1 kilometre.

Q6. What is mass? Name three units of measurement of mass.

A6. Mass is the quantity of matter contained in an object.

The three units of measurement of mass are milligram(mg), gram(g) and

kilogram(kg).

Q7. What do we use to measure time? Write three units of time and their
conversions.

A7. A clock or a watch is an instrument used to measure time.

● Some of the units to measure time are seconds(s), minutes(min) and

hour(h).
● The units of time can be converted from one to another.

For example: -

60 seconds(s) = 1 minute(min)

60 minutes(min) = 1 hour(h)

II. Let’s Apply:

Q1. Do you think the distance between Delhi and Mumbai would be different if
we measure the distance in metres instead of kilometres? Name the factor that
would change and the factor that would not.

A1. No, the distance would not change. The only factor that would change is
the unit (from km to m) .

Q2. A certain school has admission rules and takes only children who live
within 5 km from the school. Alok lives 2000m from the school and wants to go
to the same school. Will he get admission in the school?

A2. 1000m = 1km

So, 2000m = 2km. Alok will get admission in the school as he stays within 5km
range from the school which is the criteria for getting admission.
III. Let’s Analyse and Evaluate:

Q1. With the help of the speedometer reading of the vehicle, can you find the
distance travelled, if the time is known? How?

A1. Speed = Distance/Time

Or Distance = Speed x Time.

So if we know the speed of the vehicle by seeing the speedometer reading and
also the time taken, then the distance travelled can be calculated.

Q2. Mira’s textbook is 11mm thick and her sister’s textbook is 1cm thick. Whose
textbook is thicker and by how much?

A2. 10mm = 1cm

So, 11mm = 1.1cm

1.1cm – 1cm = 0.1cm

Therefore, Mira’s textbook is thicker than her sister’s textbook by 0.1cm.
